Since technology is one of our only "services"/productive sectors and many small businesses are involved in IT. This does impact us all.

It is a huge deal..... Especially if you work at or are using the services of any of these companies.

Most "experts" are predicting a massive hit. This is another reason YOU should care even if you have nothing to hid.

Today I looked at local comments on our NSA protest. Basically we were called criminals- because if we did not have anything to hide we would not care.

People are so dense!

so cuz Snowden used Lavabit email, the NSA (National Snooping Agency) has forced them to shut down? not only that, they are not allowed to publicly talk about that? this is totally disgusting [>:]

I wont use cloud computing, primarily cuz i dont trust that it is secure enough cuz seems like almost anything can be hacked.. but now, definately the NSA (National Snooping Agency) is yet another reason not to use it..

And this is reflected in my personal life. I am pulling back from services like google and facebook. I encrypt some communication now and as I get the tools in place that's becoming more and more -- a thing which makes many popular online services not work or else it's impossible to configure them in a secure fashion. I purchase less cell service than I would otherwise because cellular data is the very definition of insecure. My next operating system will be open source.

Granted, I'm a security geek (among other things) and so I'm only in the early parts of this but the real security folks are more leading edge. As they continue to work "anti-nsa" tools will become easier to use and they will frequently necessitate using choices other than google, microsoft, facebook, etc.

If I were Microsoft, for instance, I'd be really worried that I had a product out there and there was no way to secure it. It comes pre-hacked. I feel their pain since they surely don't want this but it is their own karma coming back to get them. This is the US Govt. that those very corporations built.

When people say such things to me I ask them if they might want to reconsider since they are drawing wisdom from Joseph Goebbels. The fact that people of Jewish descent say this frankly astonishes me since they had a relatively recent lesson in the implications.

Sort of... Many other "high profile" people used Lavabit too. It was shut down because they would have legally been forced to turn over any and all documentation or go to jail. While they really kept none, at a deep forensic level, I guess there is always something on the owned servers or your company books. Rather than face that decision all material was, as the NSA might say - put in a burner bag. Now threaten, sue or use all the violence in the world. That material no longer exists.


So, it was a decision to shut down. A few other companies have done the same.

its an incestuous relationship between government and business in its foundation by design, we need "some" extremely limited government with extremely limited powers and corporations even less. Vince wanted to know how it can be fixed and I will elaborate more on this later

Oh no. It's quite a bit more disgusting than that. It is now ILLEGAL in the US to provide govt. proof data security. Lavabit is the second such company this week and there will be more. The NSA didn't force them to shut down. They CHOSE to shut down because a FISA warrant was forcing them to let the government hack their systems and snoop on the customers' data and they chose to shut down and move their base of operation to another country instead.

And yes, the fact that these warrants come with gag order that prevent you from even mentioning that the warrant exists is just plain fucking creepy. Kind of makes you wonder what else the government is doing.
