You're right, it's a wiring issue to the left light only. I checked the fuse list and there isn't one specific for the license plate lights and since no other lights are blown I'm making the assumption that it is a frayed or broken wire. Frayed and broken wires to these lights are common because of the harness location.

Of course if Osidegirl's Master would like to make a suggestion I'd be happy to listen :)

It's still not at a point where trading it in is needed.

I know what the stealer is going to say - they'll tell me to use OEM BMW synthetic oil and to bring it on down for a $150 change.

I'll talk to my mechanic who only works on Euro cars next time I'm in but the man books weeks in advance and I'm just not fussed enough to take the time now.

I would have thought the simplest way to answer this would be to phone your nearest BMW dealer and have a chat with the service department.
Explain the predicament with the oils and see what answers they give you.
They might even give you an idea on the number-plate light problem.
It could be something as simple as a fuse or a grounding wire not earthed properly (rusted).

That'll take all the guesswork out of the equation completely.

*shrug* He's the most reputable Euro garage in the city. He works on more Volvos, Audi's and VW's than bimmers.

As I mentioned in my original post, it's above my skill level.

You can change the bulb and do an oil change but can't pull the wiring thru the hole in the trunk to see if a wire is broken??

I have a list of cars I'm not allowed to own. Volkswagens and Audis are on that list. Beyond the fact that they have issues past a certain mileage point (I tend to keep my cars for a long time), the parts are more expensive.

BMWs, Volvos and Mercedes are on the allowed list.

But if you read the "fix", the guy just run a bit of wire from the right side to the left side and it worked.
That's no more difficult than wiring a new plug onto a kitchen appliance.

It's been drilled into my head that BMWs are the only vehicle worth owning. I you HAVE to Volvo is OK. My Wrangler was only tolerated for big snow storms.
Fine German engineering is his religion. We've been on the track at Nürburg - obsession barely covers it.

I buy my cars used- one owner usually- I have my brother pick them out. I got 10 years out of the last one.

I am sure that because there were 6 break lights on an E320 I had, inspectors couldn't tell one was out...for about 10 years. A corner in the trunk was reserved for break light bulbs. But it was never the bulb, it was the wiring. It went un-repaired as of the day I sold it.

You I am afraid to suggest, need to put the meters on it. Trace the power, find out where it ends, replace parts accordingly. Unfortunately, you need that bulb I am sure for any safety inspections that...won't miss it.

I'm definitely an enthusiast. I tell my friends that it is "The Ultimate Driving Machine" for a reason. But, I also own a Miata, which are great fun, super reliable and economical.
