Surface-To-Air Missiles Missing After Benghazi

Joe DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney who now represents Mark Thompson, one of the so-called "Benghazi whistleblowers" who testified before Congress last spring, says he's been told that some "very ugly people" had stolen the missiles, and that the Benghazi annex played a key role in the theft. "I do not know whether [the missiles] were at the annex, but it is clear the annex was somehow involved in the process of the distribution of those missiles," said DiGenova in an interview Monday with WMAL's Mornings On The Mall.

How did DiGenova get this information? He told WMAL that ever since he and his wife and law partner, Victoria Toensing, began representing the Benghazi whistleblowers last spring, they have been contacted by several people eager to share information about what really happened the night of September 11, 2012, when four Americans were killed in the Consulate attack, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens.

"This information comes from a former intelligence official who stayed in constant contact with people in the special ops and intelligence community," said DiGenova, "and it is pretty clear that the biggest concern right now is that 400 missiles, which have been diverted in Libya and have gotten into the hands of some very ugly people. And they are worried, specifically according to these sources, about an attempt to shoot down an airliner," he added.

That's really kinda old news K.
Libya was chuck full of old Soviet Strela missiles that got into the hands of the rebels before Benghazi was ever heard of.
Those things were stolen while Quadaffi was still alive.

The claim here is that the CIA annex in Benghazi had been involved in recovering those missiles for relocation or redistribution when they were stolen.

Here's what I was talking about

http://dailycaller.com/2011/09/27/free-for-all-up-to-20000-anti-aircraft-missiles-stolen-in-libya/

Only, it wasn't 400 missiles. It was 20,000.

Jeeez. Well that kinda fits. If the CIA was involved in recovering them, maybe now we know where some of them were.

And aren't anymore.

We had a coupla threads about it here. Basically, they're 60's vintage shoulder fired short range Soviet SAM's. The good news is they haven't been maintained and more dangerous to the user than anything in the air and even at their best, 45 years ago, they were obsolete.

ETA the warheads and propellant could still make a mean IED

Granted the SA-7 wasn't anything to write home about, but the SA-16 entered service in 1981 and can still be nasty. If we managed to recover 400 of those, I can see why the losers would want them back.
