I am starting to wonder whether it is not so much a bowery, meant to attract a female, but a nest. The canals at the center may serve to lead the progeny to their individual hollow at the rim, which protection they would not be able to make for themselves. There would be selective pressure on the female to select that male as partner who in this manner would best provide protection for her offspring.
