Spiritedsub2 -> Area 51 Exists! (8/16/2013 1:53:09 PM)

The San Fran Chronicle today says the CIA now acknowledges the existence of Area 51 in Nevada! I now have the X Files song stuck in my head.

Chronicle short article

It has served as a very successful red herring for a long time. It was just swamp gas reflecting the light from Venus onto a sundog during a freak electrical storm. That's all it was...

You can pull the place up on Google Earth for crying out loud. Anyone who finds this to be some sort of revelation REALLY needs to get out more.

LadyPact -> RE: Area 51 Exists! (8/17/2013 10:02:15 AM)

Ummmm, Anybody who has ever worked for the phone company in the west knows the existence of Area 51. They have their own exchange.

jlf1961 -> RE: Area 51 Exists! (8/17/2013 2:18:37 PM)

Everyone knew area 51 existed, but what about area 52? or the secret base in the mountain at Dulce NM?

MasterCaneman -> RE: Area 51 Exists! (8/17/2013 7:23:29 PM)

cloudboy -> RE: Area 51 Exists! (8/17/2013 8:59:37 PM)

NPR was talking about this on the radio with the X-Files music playing in the background. I was cracking up. It has something to do with the U2 spy plane, apparently.

Spiritedsub2 -> RE: Area 51 Exists! (8/17/2013 9:08:36 PM)

The Area 51 news is a good appetizer. For the main course I want to hear that the Loch Ness monster is real! I sat on the Loch Ness shore for 2 straight days as a teenager and was crushed not to see her [:D].

MarieDomina -> RE: Area 51 Exists! (8/17/2013 9:13:01 PM)

What I don't understand is why they felt this was news. As if we didn't already know it exists. What ever happened to real journalism? Now its just tabloid useless information.

well the information that came out a few years ago from the government was blacked out. But now they just let it come out without all the blacked out areas. I'm guessing they were just finally past a certain time when something could be released by them which was about the fact that area 51 was the base for the U2 plane. When the information was still blacked out I'm guessing they still felt the U2 plane stuff was still important enough to be covered up along with the fact that not enough years had passed by to make it all public yet. Now though, it's not that important. We have better planes and everyone knows about the U2, nothing else to hide anymore.

But you know the conspiracy theorists will still find all of this to be a lie and that the government is still covering up the aliens by bringing this out. [8|]

Now I suppose they'll wait another 20 years before admitting the F-117 was tested there.

It wasn't so much the hardware as it was the people who were developing it. Have you ever heard of Operation Paperclip? It was a program that brought in Nazi scientists to work on space and defense-related industries. Some of those guys' backstories were horrendous, and with a sizable population of of returned veterans in the country, it was important that their presence be kept as low-key as possible.

Some, like Von Braun, they couldn't hide away, but the others that didn't have the 'rock star' persona he had, could be squirreled away to do the things we needed to beat Russia if the balloon went up. Area 51, S4, and Dreamland were only a couple secure facilities those guys worked at. With 51, it was determined that the best way to keep its secret was to make another secret open, and UFOs and aliens worked perfectly.

They had the advantage of a surge in pop culture (B movies, documentaries, books and magazines) to fuel the fire, enough 'gee-whiz' technology and techiniques to provide the spark, and all they had to to give it oxygen was to lock the place down just enough to make it mysterious. Area 51 was the greatest red herring of all time, the ultimate expression of hiding in plain sight. The best thing about it was, once they put all the pieces in place, the story became self-supporting. The less they tried to manipulate it, the better it worked because the lack of action in itself became the 'proof' many were looking for.

Hmmmm. Don't most sfx experts think that stupid alien autopsy video fake was made a good twenty years after the alleged UFO crash, though?

I remember seeing two shows on that topic. One of them wet its pants trying to convince the audience it was real, while the other methodically picked it apart as a very good fraud. The biggest gaffe was the 'autopsy' itself, which wasn't conducted in the proper form, but rather more as an exhibition piece for the camera.

The props were correct (clothing, instrumentation, clocks, etc,) were period-correct, the camera and film were both of that era, and the language was proper for the time period given. All things that could've been done by any competent SFX house from the 70's onward.

Now, please focus on the little red light, shall we? [;)]

Moonhead -> RE: Area 51 Exists! (8/18/2013 12:54:03 PM)

I think I saw that one, but I remember seeing another which dwelt more on the alien prop itself than the framing of the shot. The guy in that one seemed convinced it was a mid '60s effect, done well, but for a fairly modest budget. His reference point for that was Hammer studios, but then he was a British guy, so that's fair enough.
