LONDON — As if 500 years of ignominy lying in a grave hastily dug after his defeat in battle were not enough, King Richard III now faces a new battle in the English courts over which of two cities, Leicester or York, will be his final resting place. Two English Cities Battle in Court to Acquire Remains of King Richard III

Personally, I have no clue as to why these two groups are going to court. I mean Richard probably dont care where he is planted.

Tourism I expect, come see the final resting place of King Richard III

I reckon they should put a plaque on the car park where he was found or something

I've said York, simply because it's closer to me should I want to visit :-P

For turism, there is a Shakespeare play about him, maybe it's not romeo and julliet but still famouse, and this days he is also a main character in the tv serial about his sister in law Elizabeth, so I'd say it's worth the legal expenses.
I really don't care but if the York's group are for real his relatives they should decide about the body.

The white queen?
I say westminster...he was a king....
but hey I dont think he gives a damn, his "family" didnt know till last year, but fascinating story of his resurfacing...

FelineRanger -> RE: Where do you think he should be reinterred (8/17/2013 4:06:05 AM)

I like a Solomonic solution: split the remains evenly between the two cities. Problem solved. [sm=evil.gif]

Yes, he was Edward IVs younger brother.

The debate about York or Leicester is interesting. Bosworth, Leicestshire would be fitting, as that was where he died. York is fitting, as he was from the House of York. London is also fitting since the Yorkist Palace was Castle Barnard, roughly where Blackfriars Bridge crosses the Thames.

Mind you, it would be fitting to have him burried at the Tower of London, where he had his too nephews murdered. one of whom was Edward V

I know the hsitory but was just wondering if it was the white queen tv series, I have only seen ep 1, and Im saving up the rest:)

pahunkboy -> RE: Where do you think he should be reinterred (8/17/2013 8:47:17 AM)

I have been pretty worried about this. I think we should form a committee and study the matter.

Winterapple -> RE: Where do you think he should be reinterred (8/17/2013 10:50:10 AM)

Since he himself wanted to be buried in York I'd
say bury him in York. His parents and son are also
all buried in York. His wife and queen, Anne is buried
in Westminster Abbey( unmarked). She died before he
did( at Westminster). But it's my understanding burying
him at Westminster isn't option anymore than a state funeral
is. Some of his supporters say he'd be appalled at having
to be buried at the same place his mortal enemy Henry Tudor
aka Henry the 7th father of Henry the 8th is buried anyway.

It is still disputed whether Richard killed his nephews and
not just by crackpots. Some argue it was Henry the 7th who
had them murdered and that he had more to gain by their
deaths than Richard. Having them declared illegitimate was
enough to give Richard the throne. Shakespeare was a dramatist
not a historian.

There's also no definitive proof that the assumed bones of
the boys are actually the princes. The current Queen and her
posse refuse to allow DNA testing on the remains because
the results could cause all sorts of cluster fucks.

yes it is the white queen

Lucylastic -> RE: Where do you think he should be reinterred (8/17/2013 2:17:58 PM)

History hadnt treated him kindly thats for sure, The program about his discovery, I think Ive watched about four times now. And thru that I got into the series called Time team with Baldrick(Tony Robinson) awesome stuff for a frustrated historian wannabe archaeologist.
I say York would be good:) altho I understand why Leicester want to keep him.
Thanks Eulero:)

Do you have proof it was Richard that killed his nephews? Witness statements? Photos or videos of the act?

For all we know, his nephews could have caught bubonic measles, or black flu. They may have put their necks in the way of a nearsighted tall short guy with sword.

Just rumors but he had them in custody and this made the first suspect, than shakespeare's play condamned him, but he was writing when the grandaughter of the second suspect was in charge so...
Bt the way during the 2 roses' war they were all relatives and killed themself like flies.

littlewonder -> RE: Where do you think he should be reinterred (8/17/2013 10:10:09 PM)

he should be re-interred in York. It's where he would have wanted. It's his ancestral home. And yes it would have mattered to him where he was interred which is why he was buried where he was found...to humiliate and disrespect him and his ancestors.

Leicester is fighting a losing battle imo. They have no rights to his body.

Toysinbabeland -> RE: Where do you think he should be reinterred (8/17/2013 10:19:44 PM)

I believe he should be buried at the Church of Saint Mary and All Saints, where his father is buried.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Where do you think he should be reinterred (8/19/2013 5:38:31 AM)

York...

Moonhead -> RE: Where do you think he should be reinterred (8/19/2013 4:52:47 PM)

Another vote for York.

well they could always split the remains in two and bury him in both places.
