Is there a way to search the forum for.... Topics that a certain user has created/started?
I've been tinkering with the search but it seems like theres not...

To say it slightly differently... Is there some way to set up the search to only find a list of threads that were started by a poster?

You can find posts or threads that a specific user has participated in by typing their user id in the Author section of search.
You can further customize that search to specific areas, such as Off Topic, or Ask A Master.
It will not list every single post, as it seems to have timeline limits, and I'm not sure what those are.

So thats a no from poise... Not looking good so far, but I'm still holding out hope that someone has some trick up their sleve that lets you search for what I was talking about.

My response was definitely not a no. You can find threads/topics a user has participated in!
For example, I will search for any posts I've made that discussed candy.
I would list candy as the search term, and poise as the author, and I get this.

Poise... I appreciate your attempt at helping, are you sure you understand what I'm asking for help with?

To state it a bit more clearly...

I've played around with the search engine quite a bit at some time or another, and I say no, there isn't a way to search out the specific threads a person has begun.

(If I'm wrong, I'd love to be corrected.)

It's my opinion the search engine is supremely limited.

It appears you can't search directly for a list of threads a poster has started. But what you can do is search for that poster as author, and then look at the page of results. All comments poster has made to an existing thread start with Re:
The threads poster has started, in contrast, are bolded and don't start with Re:
Although this looks trivial when you read what I said, when you look at the physical results page, you'll see that the visual is very distinct.

This will work for the majority of posters. It won't work for those 2-3 posters who create a new thread for each passing thought that scuttles across the wasteland of their minds.

I'm going to have to go with "not possible" as well, at least for a comprehensive list. You can limit matches of a search to threads started by an author by setting the "Search only:" selection to "Topics", but you need to be matching against some string in the search term. If you don't provide a string, the search ignores the setting and just gives you everything. And, unfortunately, there is no valid wildcard that I can work out.

If the ten most recent threads started by an author would be helpful, you can view their profile on this side and, in the "Most Recent Posts" section, click on "view threads only." That will give you something like this showing the most recent threads started by the author, but it's limited to just ten. And, as you can opt to hide profiles on this side as well, this technique may not work for every author.

This is how I search for threads started by a poster as well.

Aries - if you CMail me the nick and some keywords, I'll see if I can help. If you know the approximate forum, that would be good too.

I believe it caps the results at 300.

Shallow deep, if there was a "view threads only" feature in the main search I'd be a very happy chap, the last 10 threads is really only a very small segment when you think some posters have been on here for a lota years... But it will have to do. Thanks!

Kali, I appreciate the offer, but I don't know any keywords... If I wanted to find all the topics/threads you have created for example... What keyword would help to do that?

Oh, I thought you were looking for a particular thread. In that case, you'll just have to look through the 300 results for the ones that do not begin with Re.

Yes. Type in their name in the search mechanism.

Those will be their posts.

When I'm looking for posts that Master has made I do it exactly like Poise explained. I've been doing it that way for years now and it works every single day. Never had a problem.

Typing just a name in brings up a limit of 300 posts. For me, that takes me back to May of this year.

If I wanted to see posts that I created, none would come up. Oh wait, I think I put a couple in the Random section recently. Other than that I think it's been well over a year.

But I wouldn't want to scan through 15 search pages of 300 posts to find out.

It would be a fun little tool, though, what Aries is asking for. But it doesn't exist.

You don't READ all 300 results, you just scan for the ones missing the Re:

That doesn't help if a user, for example, has 1000 posts and their 300 most recent in the past year were only replies, not created threads.
It would be nice to search an author, removing "RE:" or an option to click threads created by a specific poster.
I've tried a few different things and I can't figure anything out (which is no surprise to me - if shallowdeep can't then I suspect there's a slim chance I would).

It's a good question, though. I'd love to see all threads created by specific posters.

If you remember approximately when the post and what section it was in you can go all the way back to when the site was created (2004?) to search for it. Cumbersome, but if the poster is prolific, it will get you older results.

For instance, if someone has been here for 8 years and wanted to see their very first posts and remembers posting in the Ask A Master section, just keep scrolling back in that section until you start seeing posts from 2005.

It would be a nice feature to have. At this point, I don't believe there is a way to *only* search for originals. (Thread creator.) Had I thought about it when I joined in 2007, I'd have added a specific keyword to original posts or reference threads that I created (example: buttermilk or some word that would be highly unlikely for use in replies) so that I would be able to have a short list.

I don't know if you are willing to invest the effort but this one wouldn't be a bad idea to pass along to Support. Maybe the next time they are adding a feature to the site, the Owner would consider it.
