New Jersey on Monday became the second state after California to ban so-called conversion therapy aimed at changing the sexual orientation of gay minors after Gov. Chris Christie signed into law a bill to prohibit the controversial practice.

Christie, a Republican, had been expected to sign the legislation, which passed both houses of the state legislature in June.

In a signing letter released after Christie took action, he said that he took into account concerns about the government "limiting parental choice" in the treatment of their children.

"However, I also believe that on issues of medical treatment for children we must look to experts in the field to determine the relative risks and rewards" the governor added. "The American Psychological Assn. has found that efforts to change sexual orientation can pose critical health risks including, but not limited to, depression, substance abuse, social withdrawal, decreased self-esteem and suicidal thoughts.

"I believe that exposing children to these health risks without clear evidence of benefits that outweigh these serious risks is not appropriate. Based upon this analysis, I sign this bill into law."

Christie, a Roman Catholic who is considered a likely 2016 presidential contender, opposes same-sex marriage, and his state is one of two in the northeast that does not recognize gay marriages. In releasing his signing statement, however, Christie's office included a comment he made to CNN in which he said that despite his church's stance, Christie has "always believed that people are born with the predisposition to be homosexual."

The anti-conversion therapy bill, A-3371, declares that being “lesbian, gay or bisexual is not a disease, disorder, illness, deficiency or shortcoming,” and it bans licensed therapists from providing gay-to-straight conversion therapy to children under age 18.

Good man but that's another nail in the coffin of his presidential campaign.

He'd be a contender in the General but the Primary would be really tough.

I think that unless the D side pulled a rabbit out of its hat he'd win the general but the bible Beaters on the far right fringe would rather kill his chances and have another loser.

Yep, but I doubt he was ever going to get much of the fundie vote anyway.

Are you complaining? If the GOP keeps fucking off anybody halfway sane to keep the psycho fundie wing of the party happy, at least it gives the Dems a chance to scrape up some testicular fortitude and nominate an actual leftist rather than a neocon rodeo clown in a rubber ethnic mask...

At this point Christie must know he has no chance in the Republican primaries in 2016. I think he may be setting himself up for a run as a moderate right of center independent.

I wonder that to. I absolutely believe he is planning on running
for president barring unforeseen obstacles ( money, health).
He could drain votes from the Dems but if the Repubs run a
scary even for them candidate he'll take votes from them to.

I think that Christie stands no chance, despite the fact he is very popular in NJ and has shown a lot of what many conservatives would like to be conservative actions, fiscally conservative, but also willing to work with others to accomplish things. As a former federal prosecutor who prosecuted people for financial industry misconduct, he could have real credibility in terms of cleaning up Wall Street and so forth.

But no, he won't make it, the GOP primaries are so shifted towards the loony right, the religious right and the tea party know nothings (it should strike people odd that they would, given that the Tea Party claims to want to shut down Wall Street and punish those who did what they did, but the Tea Party GOP members have slashed money for DOJ to go after the financial firms, which tells you what a load of hypocrites they are).

I am pretty certain his refusal to sign a same sex marriage bill is political, and I think he is delusional if he thinks anyone but a candidate catering to the idiot branch of the GOP running it will get through the primaries. All I keep hearing is how the GOP needs to run a 'real conservative', some tea party type or worse, and I think they are going to find they are going to win the red states and be killed elsewhere. The only hope the GOP has in 2016 is if voters are so turned off they don't show up, and leave the election to the loons who do vote or old people.

BTW Christie is not against church teaching by signing this, the RC's official position, unlike the evangelical droolers, is that being gay is inate (they changed their stance a long time ago), and they don't believe you can change it or it is a choice (their answer, though, isn't enlightened, they say basically if you are gay you should be celibate and not form relationships and such...).

It is about time someone moved to ban this therapy because it is a joke. The 'success rate' is about 5% (i.e that someone is living a heterosexual lifestyle 5 year after therapy), and even that is dubious, even among the 5% most report that they still have same sex yearnings, so it is likely it is nothing more than trying to cure cancer with hydrotherapy.

Christie's one and only hope is that people will be so fed up with extreme view points from either side, that a ground swell of rational thought will put him in the White House. Rational thought by a majority of Americans? What was I thinking?

Gay-to-straight therapy was proven to be bullshit about a decade ago.

Okay.... I have to ask.... Is this really such a huge problem in New Jersey that the state needs to ban it? Never mind.... it's rhetorical. Even people in New Jersey can't be so stupid that they have masses of gays lined up for something that's been proven not to work anyway. It's not like Jersey is Detroit...

More likely; Christie is just so desperate that he needs a do nothing/feel good law passed so he will continue to have a career in politics.

I never realized that "conversion therapy" was such a "big problem" in New Jersey.
Did they like....have signs on the highway or something?

Bachman's husband pocketed tens to hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars up to a couple of years ago with his "Pray away the Gay" therapy. It may have been proven to be bullshit but stupid RW Bible Thumpers are still sending their children in droves.
