jlf1961 -> What is wrong with.... (8/20/2013 4:10:26 PM)

I got a message recently from a sub who wanted to know more about me. Cool. (Granted I figured she was insane, but what the hell)

Told her my financial situation, living situation (buying home with my sister) and plans to eventually move to a renovated underground missile installation.

Financial was a pass, present living arrangements and future plans were not acceptable.

Okay living with sis I can understand. The primary reason is so that this home can be bought and give her a place to call home, I plan to move to another piece of property that I own...

What is wrong with wanting to live in an underground Nuclear weapon proof bunker off grid?

DesFIP -> RE: What is wrong with.... (8/20/2013 4:19:51 PM)

Lack of sunlight. We are hard wired for sunlight. The less sun, the higher the rates of alcoholism and depression.

Now an earth berm house with windows on one side, and the back wall dug into the slope for less temperature swings is okay, but they wind up looking like an old single wide trailer. Not cool that.

The atlas missile that used to be in the silo was removed back in the sixties. No missile, just a nuke, zombie, tornado, asteroid impact proof underground residential emplacement.

People have bought old missile silos and made homes out of them. I would consider it cool if my knees could stand the stairs.

littlewonder -> RE: What is wrong with.... (8/20/2013 6:49:28 PM)

for me it would be a huge problem because of my depression. It's too dark and dank. I need sunlight, warmth and lots of it. Otherwise I would become suicidal. So yeah, I can see why not a lot would want your situation.

Actually, there are ways to "pipe" in sunlight to an underground home.

By using blast proof glass, and shielding the pipe, you can bring natural light into the structure. I have also planned to establish hd cameras around the area and having them go to a security center, as well as HD Monitors set up on walls to mimic windows. I have also seen silos that have a simple conventional home built over the entrance to the complex, effectively masking the existence of the structure underground. I am presently considering a combination of both plans.

littlewonder -> RE: What is wrong with.... (8/20/2013 7:21:32 PM)

For me though that wouldn't work. I need real sunlight, real windows. Just piping in natural sunlight doesn't work for me nor does mimicking. When I first moved to Baltimore it was the first thing that was important to me...a home with lots of light, lots of windows...the bigger the better. Unfortunately though, right before I moved in, the landlord had sealed over the skylight because it was leaking and instead of fixing it he covered it over with ceiling. By that point I had already put all my effort into this apartment. The next place I decide to rent though will have floor to ceiling windows or at least many, many and large windows.

It's not a matter of right or wrong, it's a matter of preference. In general, humans will burrow and live below out of fear and necessity, not choice. You may have a hard time finding someone with tastes similar to yours, someone who finds the idea appealing.

I'd be willing to consider it just for the tornado thing.
Or at the very least turn it into a deluxe storm shelter.
Did you tell her the positive aspects of having a home
like that? It might not be for everyone but I think there
are women out there who'd be ok with it.

yes but they look like lamps, the psicological effect is not the same as having a window, they are used to have more light in a spot not reached by windows, having only this kind of spotligths it's not the best in confort.

Sorry. Too busy laughing to give the question any serious consideration. It's okay. I'm also a weirdo.

metamorfosis -> RE: What is wrong with.... (8/21/2013 3:55:30 AM)

I can't stop. You might as well have asked, what's wrong with lighting your own farts on fire to see of they really blow? The answer: nothing. Absolutely nothing. BTW, I've done that too.

You go, man. No, really.

I'm not laughing at you...

I love you, man. Really. There's nothing worse than being normal.

sexyred1 -> RE: What is wrong with.... (8/21/2013 4:01:05 AM)

I would say no to you OP for a few reasons, the least of which you would not have the closet space to support my shoe and handbag collection.

MAINEiacMISTRESS -> RE: What is wrong with.... (8/21/2013 4:55:13 AM)

Well, the FUN part has been removed, so that's ME out.

I'm in it for the BUTTON PUSHING, ya know!

Absolutely nothing, in my book. I've always wanted to have my very own escape missile. Yes, I know they removed the original denizen, but that just means I can shop around for a better one! I can see this in my mind's eye, all of my enemies lined up outside waiting to bust in when the blast doors peel back and they're immolated in the jetblast coming off the main engines as I soar to freedom. I'd need to build a capsule that holds all my cool and necessary stuff, but that's trivial if I have the $$ to buy a missile silo. [:)]

Duskypearls -> RE: What is wrong with.... (8/21/2013 8:55:57 AM)

Surely, there's a lady prepper or two out there...

ResidentSadist -> RE: What is wrong with.... (8/21/2013 8:57:34 AM)

I would love to own a silo and convert it into a home and fortress. I looked and looked . . . not one damn silo in Miami Beach or the Florida Keys.

MasterCaneman -> RE: What is wrong with.... (8/21/2013 10:13:21 AM)

Water table it too high there for them. If I recall, the Air Force went nuts trying to keep the ones they had from flooding. After their abandonment people used them for scuba diving when they filled up.

My home is made from a dozen 40 foot shipping containers...There may be enough room in one of them.
