For those of you interested in Raptors I was out for a hike yesterday when I came upon an amazing sight. No more than 30 feet from me was a Hawk on the ground with a snake in his talons.

All I had on me was an iPhone but thought I would try to get a video. He was too greedy to give up the snake and I guess it was too heavy for him to carry...or he just did not give a damn... but he let me get within three feet of him to take this video.

Poor quality I'm afraid but still interesting.

HERE it is.

That's pretty awesome video. Fascinating how he seemed to be hiding/protecting it with his wings, while eating.

Thank you for sharing!

That was amazing. Pretty incredible to get that close.
Beautiful, beautiful birds. Thanks for sharing.

I'm frankly amazed at how close you got. Unless there was a lot more to that snake than I could see she could have flown away with it. I think she must be so habituated to human presence she does not consider people to be a threat which does not bode well for her long term survival.

Very cool. Did you notice if that hawk was banded? I can't quite tell, but in some frames it looks like there might be something shiny on his leg.

No I didn't... we have a bird sanctuary no more than 5 miles away. That may explain why I could get that close

This hawk is not a loner... it is often setting on transmission towers with a mate. I am loading a version to youtube now where I added some light...I'll check for the band again.

Good eye Kirata... I added some light in the new video below... it looks to me like his left leg has a band.

A little over bright in places... but still more detail in the legs and snake.

I'll check for the band again.

Good view of what looks like a band at 1:16 and thereafter, especially at 1:46 (full screen helps).

It's there for sure ... I sent a note to the World Bird Sanctuary rehabilitation center...I'm sure they will be interested and may decide to take some action to get this bird afraid of humans as it should be.

Is it the larger of the two? The females are significantly larger than males. Hard to judge from the items in the frame but I'm almost positive that is a female. Also that is almost certainly a band. The other leg has light colored feathers where that leg shows a metallic bronze color.

needlesandpins -> RE: Hawk (8/21/2013 12:55:39 AM)

wow hat a beautiful bird. she's definitely a captive reared bird though. I love hawks a lot, so captive or wild just coming across a bird like that eating a snake would be fantastic.

a friend of mine has hawks and we were talking about them a couple of nights ago. I like the idea of having a pair......always have, but i'm not sure I could really.

great video, thanks for sharing.

Good sized mated pair then. I just wish he wasn't so habituated to people. Some jackhole is going to do him harm.

It amazes me how many raptors I see in suburban NJ where i live. Growing up, you never saw them, Hawks and Falcons were something you only thought lived in the mountains...now they are quite common, you see them all the time, red tailed hawks, goshawks, falcons....though I am currently mad at them, I have a multi year snit against them, they didn't do their job, some sort of rodent got into my garage, and caused about 10k worth of damage to my nice convertible, if those bums had been doing their job, wouldn't have happened.....then, this huge goshawk camped out in our back yard near our bird feeders, and decided it was bliss for him, so not only didn't they get the rats that did a humber on my car, they insist on dining on my birds I feed, think my back yard is the raptor diner or some such........I was gonna get a hawk tattoo at some point, but I might have to do a Ben Franklin and get a wild turkey *lol*.....

My favorite was the two turkey buzzards my son caught on film nesting in a tree across the street from where I live. I love that picture, I named it Mr. and Mrs. Carl Malden:)

Be in awe of these birds, if they hadn't banned DDT when they did, it is likely the only place you would see them might be in a zoo or such.
