This is my neighborhood rodent exterminator. This was taken in my back yard a few years ago...I've posted it here before but thought you may like to see it.

It amazes me how many raptors I see in suburban NJ where i live. Growing up, you never saw them, Hawks and Falcons were something you only thought lived in the mountains...now they are quite common, you see them all the time, red tailed hawks, goshawks, falcons....though I am currently mad at them, I have a multi year snit against them, they didn't do their job, some sort of rodent got into my garage, and caused about 10k worth of damage to my nice convertible, if those bums had been doing their job, wouldn't have happened.....then, this huge goshawk camped out in our back yard near our bird feeders, and decided it was bliss for him, so not only didn't they get the rats that did a humber on my car, they insist on dining on my birds I feed, think my back yard is the raptor diner or some such........I was gonna get a hawk tattoo at some point, but I might have to do a Ben Franklin and get a wild turkey *lol*.....

My favorite was the two turkey buzzards my son caught on film nesting in a tree across the street from where I live. I love that picture, I named it Mr. and Mrs. Carl Malden:)

Be in awe of these birds, if they hadn't banned DDT when they did, it is likely the only place you would see them might be in a zoo or such.

Where my grandparents lived when I was a kid all we ever saw was the occasional buzzard. Now there is a huge population of bald eagles, golden eagles and other raptors that winter there or live there year round. The recovery is truly amazing.

Thanks for sharing, I love the predatory birds.

A great big beautiful hawk for sure. And yeah, he was hiding the snake from kd -- he was worried you were going to take his snack.

Last couple of years we've had an explosion of bald eagles. It was a cause for celebration when the first nesting pair moved in. Now I don't know how many there are. I think the warm winters may have allowed them to have a second brood, because many of them are immature, not yet showing the white head.

The return of the big raptors after the banning of DDT shows the impact man can have on nature for better or worse. When I was younger there were no eagles or hawks in the sky's. I can remember with awe the first time I heard a hawk calling while soaring above my head. I was hiking in the wilds of the Missouri Ozarks and for the first time I could imagine how my native American ancestors must have felt when seeing the majestic creature gliding on the air. Its mournful call touches something in my sole and brings me closer to our common nature.

From yesterday's news .... One of the most popular stories on a local news channel ... http://www.wrdw.com/home/headlines/Hawk-flies-away-with-family-pet--220580101.html

Hawk flies off with a family pet.

That wing-spreading thing is called "mantling," which many raptors do all the time (whether or not you were there, watching).

Birds of prey are nasty, smelly, filthy, and ill-tempered. They often carry many parasites.

Banded or not, there is no such thing as a "tame" bird...even calling one "trained" would be a stretch-- more "conditioned," really.

And the shell-softening claim about DDT is hyperbole bullshit. Rachel Carson's craptastic preaching probably resulted in more human deaths and misery than most totalitarian regimes. http://www.forbes.com/sites/henrymiller/2012/09/05/rachel-carsons-deadly-fantasies/

Nope your own deeply biased article even admits the shell softening happens
quote:

The now well-known problems associated with the thinning of raptor’s eggshells – while always exaggerated – can be completely avoided by using DDT with care exclusively in residential areas, because the chemical remains largely near where it is sprayed.

Also we have the simple evidence of our senses. My family is from The Tennessee River valley area in Alabama and in the 1970's if there was a bald eagle anywhere in the area I never saw it. Now in the winter, when the birds migrate south, you can see dozens if you put out even a little effort.

Then of course we have the Peregrines. Extinct in the Eastern US just a couple of decades ago it is doubtful that any urban environment anywhere in the US does not now host at least one breeding pair.

As to the supposed benefits of spraying DDT indoors etc., its sort of amazing that if the chemical is actually banned worldwide, it isn't, that these techniques have become so well understood. In fact DDT is still used in areas where malaria is endemic and despite your article's claims it has serious health effects particularly in infants.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDT#Human_exposure

Then of course is the fact that mosquitoes become resistant to DDT just like any other pesticicde.

Anyone looking into the subject will find very quickly that the groups so interested in spraying DDT to stop malaria, Africa Fighting Malaria for instance, are fronts and paid shills for the pesticide manufacturers. I wonder why that is?

As to your statement that wild raptors are "nasty, smelly, filthy, and ill-tempered. They often carry many parasites." nasty is subjective. Ill tempered? Hve you ever watched a raptor care for its young? They are loving dedicated parents who naturally don't like other animals intruding on their lives which makes tham more like humans than most of the animals we share our environments with. Filthy? Ever watched a raptor preen? That is meticulously cleaning itself. As to parasites, all animals often carry parasites. You are likely host to several billion right now.

I live near Morro Rock, which is a peregrine falcon preserve. I'm happy to say they're rebounding nicely here. Incredibly stiff fines and penalties are imposed if someone climbs or otherwise tries to disturb the birds and their nests. In addition to the fine (I heard $10k), climbers must be helicoptered off the rock and pay for that, too.

Thank you MistressDarkArt for the compliment. Too gruesome for publication I’m afraid. I did get some humming birds published in a local paper once though. I do like to take pictures of birds.

I went to the park there once when I was in the Navy in the 1980's. Not sure if there were falcons there back then but I do fondly remember watching a couple of sea otters playing just offshore.

The otters are still there, happily napping in the kelp beds. :D

And now we return to our regularly scheduled programming on Faux News, "Obama: Socialist or Muslim Terrorist, we give you the facts, you decide"

The DDT thing was not bullshit, and the proof is in the pudding, the fact that the raptors and birds like Ospreys have returned from near extinction is testimony to what that ban did. Rachel Carson was not lying, and the only people still whining about DDT are the pesticide manufacturers, the same people who claimed agent orange (an herbicide) was safe and who got their buddies in the GOP to prevent Vietnam vets from getting treatment for the horrible effects it had on them, that forbes article is written by a shill for the pesticide companies who has no science background.

And yes, I have heard all the whining from Ortho and such that banning DDT consigned millions to death and so forth, and that is such bullshit I don't know where to start. First of all, DDT wasn't used to control malaria in the US, it was used as a general purpose insecticide like malathion and sevin, it was sprayed on farm fields, on forests, it was sprayed by towns to try and keep down the mosquito populations (hint, malaria is not common in the US in most places, especially the areas where the raptors live), the chemical companies promoted DDT as this wonder chemical that could do it all, and they used it like they were spraying water.

What they are talking about in Africa is not broad based spraying, they are talking about spraying around huts and such to keep the malarial mosquitoes at bay, it isn't spraying tons of DDT from crop dusting planes and trucks like they used to do when I was a kid, it is targeted, rather narrow use, and there is a big difference. DDT was banned because in the US, there wasn't a need for its use at all, there were plenty of ways to control mosquitoes and such and we simply don't have the malaria problems they do in Africa, and where there is there are plenty of other ways to control it. BTW, in Africa, you don't have to use DDT either, simply mosquito netting, that is cheaper than DDT, works just as well without the consequences, but then how could dow and ortho make oodles of money off it? The chemical industry are some of the biggest fucking liars in history, GE claimed dumping PCB's in the Hudson river was no big deal, then when they had testimony on the levels of PCB's in the water, GE said it went into the sediment and levels in the river were well below EPA levels...until they showed that those testifying literally shifted a decimal point, so 2.4 ppm was really 24 PPM. Industry denied for years that asbestos was unsafe, even though they knew it wasn't sage and denied that workers who processed it got sick from it. For all the excesses on the other end (with asbestos, the left made it seem like if you just looked at asbestos it was deadly, and it got to the point that if asbestos was found in building, they treated it like it was ricin or something, firms made a bundle being 'asbestos handling' firms, when it can be removed if need be using simple precautions, and as long as it is sealed in, could be left in place, but not before many billions were wasted on hysteria). Same thing with the mold epidemic, while mold is a major issue, several years ago they made it seem like everyone was going to die from black mold......), industry has shown that it will lie and so called conservatives will swear to it, all in the name of a few dollars profit.

We have hawks around here. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of one on the fence line but mainly when we drive by, we accidentally disturb one that seems to have a nest somewhere on our property. One year when I was in my teens, we had a golden eagle. Mom put the word out that our place is for the birds...no hunting allowed.
