"She has more sooty baggage than a 90-car freight train."

The whole interview is a gem but Paglia sure nails Mrs. Clinton!

Camille Paglia: “It remains baffling how anyone would think that Hillary Clinton is our party’s best chance”

Alas, the page won't load on my elderly Mac.

But since we're using Paglia as a judge of character, I thought it might be interesting to see some of her other observations about life, the universe, and everything.

Are we like late Rome, infatuated with past glories, ruled by a complacent, greedy elite, and hopelessly powerless to respond to changing conditions?

Men know they are sexual exiles. They wander the earth seeking satisfaction, craving and despising, never content. There is nothing in that anguished motion for women to envy.

If civilization had been left in female hands we would still be living in grass huts.

The damage done to U.S. prestige by the feckless, buffoonish George W. Bush will take years to repair.

There is no female Mozart because there is no female Jack the Ripper.

I am a registered Democrat who is determined to return my party to the proletarian principles of the Franklin D. Roosevelt era.

Our presence in Afghanistan is not worth the price of any more American lives or treasure.

Except for naval and air exercises, our military should be stationed on American soil, where service men and women can lead normal lives in close proximity to family and friends.

The moment is ripe for an experienced businessman to talk practical, prudent economics to the electorate - which is why Mitt Romney's political fortunes are steadily being resurrected from the grave.

History shows that male homosexuality, which like prostitution flourishes with urbanization and soon becomes predictably ritualized, always tends toward decadence.

Though men may be deep, mentally they are slow.

My thinking tends to be libertarian. That is, I oppose intrusions of the state into the private realm - as in abortion, sodomy, prostitution, pornography, drug use, or suicide, all of which I would strongly defend as matters of free choice in a representative democracy.

“The prostitute is not, as feminists claim, the victim of men, but rather their conqueror, an outlaw, who controls the sexual channels between nature and culture.”

“Gay men are guardians of the masculine impulse. To have anonymous sex in a dark alleyway is to pay homage to the dream of male freedom. The unknown stranger is a wandering pagan god. The altar, as in pre-history, is anywhere you kneel.”

“Moralism and ignorance are responsible for the constant stereotyping of prostitutes by their lowest common denominator -- the sick, strung-out addicts, couched on city stoops, who turn tricks for drug money. . . . The most successful prostitutes in history have been invisible. That invisibility was produced by their high intelligence, which gives them the power to perceive, and move freely but undetected in the social frame. The prostitute is a superb analyst, not only in evading the law but in initiating the unique constellation of convention and fantasy that produces a stranger’s orgasm. She lives by her wits as much as her body. She is a psychologist, actor, and dancer, a performance artist of hyper-developed sexual imagination.”

Jesus was a brilliant Jewish stand-up comedian, a phenomenal improvisor. His parables are great one-liners.

Definitely an interesting lens for looking at the world. [:)]

It took awhile but it eventually loaded for me, dc.

I love Camille. I've met her. I've seen her speak.
I've read all her books and recommend them all
wholeheartedly. I loved her latest book Glittering
Images, it's amazing and audacious, classic Camille.

Anyone familier with Camille knows she's outrageous,
provocative and prone to hyperbole. Just like most
people who are familier with the Clinton's know they
have baggage. Not really big news.

And you pulled some of her greatest quotes.
She's got stacks of others because she's compulsivly quoteable.[;)]

It's at salon.com today... or once there you can search her name.

I am just curious about your point though.... are you saying that precisely because Ms is a principled progressive Democrat and is able to defend and promote her positions, I should not use her or link to her interview but my view differ from her's about 68% of the time?

I think she was spot on about Mrs. Clinton, Andrew Wiener, Paleofeminism, BDSM, the death of the avant-garde movement and modern pornography (the latter to a point) all in all I think she knocked the interview right out of the park. Well maybe not the Meg Ryan bit but I digress.

Back to the OP, I think she is absolutely on target about Mrs. Clinton and the rest of the Baby Boomer politicians. It long past time the American people put the Boomers out to pasture. Hell, the following generations will be paying for their mistakes, massive debts and retirements for a long long time.

She was right about Meg Ryan to.[8D]

The one dem I know now, that I would vote for is Mark Warner, Sen D-Va. He was one of the best govs. ever in Va. He's center/right and much more the pragmatist than outspoken partisan.

He may be too good and get marginalized by certain media like Hillary is now. Who ever survives the neocons media onslaught will win but Warner could with dem numbers get the nom.

Cite whomever you like, of course.

But I think folks unfamiliar with Paglia might find it illuminating to see that she can be a bit, well, "out there" and that a pinch of salt may be handy seasoning for her views.

What in your view makes her a "principled progressive Democrat"?

cloudboy -> RE: Camille Paglia "baffling... that Hillary Clinton is our party’s best chance" (8/22/2013 6:50:46 AM)

The bigger headline is you reading salon and paglia.

Winterapple -> RE: Camille Paglia "baffling... that Hillary Clinton is our party’s best chance" (8/22/2013 9:51:14 AM)

In the interview I believe she called herself a Libertarian.
When she began voting in the sixties she was a Democrat
but I don't know how closely she identifies as one now.
She's a bit of a maverick.

But from a leftist point of view there's nothing shocking
about what she said. Both the Clinton's are moderate to
conservative Democrats as is Obama. They don't carry
the mantle of FDR except for trying to hang on to Social
Security.

SilverMark -> RE: Camille Paglia "baffling... that Hillary Clinton is our party’s best chance" (8/22/2013 10:21:19 AM)

No matter the opinions, if the election were held tomorrow, you'd be referring to Hillary as Madam President.

mnottertail -> RE: Camille Paglia "baffling... that Hillary Clinton is our party’s best chance" (8/22/2013 10:44:08 AM)

And if it is held with the opponent being Cruz....you would be calling the president madame.

I saw her on PBS last week (?) and liked the interview.
I've got a good bit of libertarianism in me too and agree with her on many of the issues. The less govt. the better.
Whether the dems run Hillary or whoever is meaningless to me, I just don't care about the democrat party. I hope they go extinct.

mnottertail -> RE: Camille Paglia "baffling... that Hillary Clinton is our party’s best chance" (8/22/2013 2:38:18 PM)

Whether you like it or not, extinction is more likely in the republican party.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Camille Paglia "baffling... that Hillary Clinton is our party’s best chance" (8/22/2013 4:21:54 PM)

Neither of them are going anywhere.
