For the first point, yep. When Mass got same sex marriage, the religious right, especially Ma Church (who in the last 100 years never seem to be on the right side of anything), claiming society would fall apart, the social fabric would be rent, the evangelicals proclaimed men and women would not get married and instead would marry same sex partners, because the sex was better....and at the time, 65% of Mass people polled said they were afraid of that.....within a year or two, 70% wondered what the fuss was, and these days other than evangelical christians and some Catholic purists, no one cares. There also is a perverted logic to their reasoning, they reason that if people see gay couples getting married, having kids, they will realize they aren't freaks having sex with anything that moved, but real people wanting to have a family and settle down...so they oppose it. The problem is that gays are fighting for the right to marry, and the religious right look like exactly what they are,a bunch of medievalist morons who claim gays are all sexual perverts who want to bed as many of their own sex as possible and yet would sexual dionysian types fight for the right to marry and be a boring old husband/wife?
As for part 2, that is the fundamental problem with the Catholic church or any dogma based organization, they get to the point where they refuse to change their minds about anything, they believe that if they admit they were wrong it will weaken them..and meanwhile, they hold on to things, refusing to admit they were wrong, when the shelf life ended a long time before, and they look like idiots. The church officially dropped the earth centered solar system in the 192o's (not 1820's, 1920's), and it took them two attempts, in 1984 and 1992, to admit that Galileo didn't commit heresy...and they wonder why their credibility is so diminished.......religion would have a lot more credibility if it admitted what it claimed at times was wrong, rather than trying to defend things in the face of logic.
