I am ambivalent about FL. I stopped posting and removed myself from some of the groups there because I didn't like a lot of what I was reading. And some group owners are quite the little Hitlers with the way they run their teeny domains (I won't name names). Some groups are amusing, like the classified meeting groups. Others that are more in line with my predilections tend to not be updated very frequently, and others are populated (it seems) by HNGs. As for "Off The Grid", it can mean many things. At the furthest extreme it's a bunker somewhere in the Rockies, Tetons, or Appalachian ranges, all power is self-supplied, no phone or internet but they do have ham radio available (when they choose to break radio silence, that is), and they only go to town twice a year to pick up the things they can't make from stone, bone, fur, or scrap metal. At the nearest, it's having a backup generator and solar panels on the roof, and a hidden pantry with six month's of grub in a house located in the exurbs. I personally am in arrangements to purchase a small plot of land about 60 miles from me. I've camped on it before, there's a well and a power line within hookup range, and its on a road that does receive some level of attention during the snow season. The only difficulty I have is, there are the remains of a cabin that need to be dealt with, and either constructing a new one or simply placing a travel trailer under a pole barn (it snows a lot here at times) instead. If I go off-grid, the only way folks'd know is when I cease communicating with them. That's living off-the-grid and under the radar.
