lovethyself -> Zoo Photos (8/25/2013 3:16:59 PM)

I know there's a number of people on here that love seeing and hearing about zoo animals. I was at the zoo both last weekend and this weekend, so I thought I'd share some photos I got while there.

dc, this first one is for you. It's our visiting male giant panda, Da Mau, enjoying a nice bamboo snack.

This is going to take a couple of posts, since these are photo's I took, not links from other sites.

Here's the female white lion. I'm not sure of her name, as there were two.

...and here's the male, Fintan.

Not sure how much people are interested in background of the white lions, but here's some info.

Genetic Rarity

We are very excited to have white lions return to our collection. White lions are not albinos, nor a separate species, but a genetic rarity. They carry the recessive gene known as a colour inhibitor of the Kruger subspecies of lion (Panterha leo krugeri) said to be indigenous to the Timbavati region of South Africa. This region is characterized by white sandy riverbeds and in winter the long grass of this region is pale in colour. They vary from blonde through near-white in colour, and in this habitat these colours provide better camouflage than tawny (yellowish-brown), thus their colouration does not appear to be a disadvantage to their survival. The earliest recorded sighting of white lions in the Timbavati region was in 1928, but it wasn't until 1975 when a litter containing two white cubs were seen at the Timbavati game reserve that it was confirmed. The last white lion was seen in the wild in 1994, after which time they were considered extinct in the wild. In 2003, the first reintroduction of white lions into the Timbavati Reserve occurred. This is important to the local communities as they revere white lions and hold them sacred.

Both the polar bear and the grizzly were enjoying a nice cool swim.

This jaguar decided to take a nap instead to escape the heat.

lovethyself -> RE: Zoo Photos (8/25/2013 3:54:29 PM)

I wanna go back next month when it's a little cooler, and see if I can get some pics with a little more action in them. Most of the big animals were sleeping in the heat. I've been watching way too much National Geographic Wild channel recently. lol.

Thanks. I was using an 8meg Cannon with a 52mm lense. To be honest, I had to check to tell you even that much. My mom wanted a better one, so I got her old one for my birthday (by request). The hard part was figuring out how to take pics through the glass without getting reflections.

I have more, if people are interested in them. I didn't want to post too many all at once.

You should definitely go to the zoo. I never realized how much some zoos to help endangered species and support conservation. It was really eye opening. Not to mention a blast! And a good workout. I walked a ton!!!

Here are a couple from the San Diego Zoo...not new pics but I still like them...One is a porcupine they were walking around on a leash so he could exercise..the other one shows a polar bear going after a carrot..they hide them around the enclosure...that will be in the next posting...

Wow! I didn't know porcupines got that big. Ours are much smaller.

And who knew you could leash-train them?

ETA: Just sent the photo to one of our small mammals keepers, asking if we can get our porcs walking on a lead. Hope you don't mind!

DesFIP -> RE: Zoo Photos (8/25/2013 6:36:30 PM)

I would love to have a pet porcupine. Or to have the job of designated porcupine personal trainer. He's so cute!

playfulotter -> RE: Zoo Photos (8/25/2013 7:08:05 PM)

I don't mind at all about sending the pic to someone else dcnovice...I will say they weren't like dogs on leashes but went along with it grudgingly....I just never thought I would be so close to one..they are a lot cuter than I thought!

PS..I believe this porcupine was one from another country but I can't remember which one...that might explain his/her size.
