Its not the cash cow people believe it to be.

Yeah, I don't think it's a "cash cow" although 1.5% of total revenue for an operation like Merck is nothing to sneeze at. I just have no doubts that some company like Merck would poison a few hundred thousand children for the sake of a boost in their quarterly. I have few doubts the FDA would approve such a thing. That means I must treat their product as untrustworthy.

They'd get caught and sued out of existence. Just look at the losses these companies take from drugs that are actually effective. I'm not saying big pharma is perfect but they're not that evil.

tazzygirl -> RE: Irony (8/26/2013 7:19:27 PM)

A few hundred thousand? Really? Wow, guess having to live in an iron lung is preferable to that belief.

Until you can control who you spread the disease to, vaccines are not a personal choice.

That's a little dramatic. Of course they are... Look at all the vaccines that they push, its not just measle or mumps. Big pharma is big business.

It would help if you aimed your cynicism at an actual abuse. Nobody has gotten rich off a vaccine yet. Sales are ONE per customer, usually sold in highly discounted large batches to governments or NGOs. The money in Big Pharm is products that people buy and buy and buy. Like Viagra or pain relievers. The problem with vaccines is getting any big enough phai thrmaceutical company to work on one. Most do the numbers and are highly uninterested.
Polio was obvious, everyone in my generation knew kids in our classes wearing braces. Or worse. Measles, and the other serious childhood diseases affected everyone. Only ignorant young people diss protection from them.
We finally have a decent vaccine for the worst of the HPVs and idiots everywhere claim they promote immorality. When did cervical cancer become moral?
Vaccines, infectious disease outbreak isolation, sewer systems and effectively clean public water supplies have lengthened the human life span, not medical interventions in individual trauma, infection and critical diseases. Preventing disease is the proper and efficient response, treatment is too expensive and often too little, too late. Bill Gates well understands this and seems to be trying to get the monkey of highly questionable fortune building off his back by financing the most serious effort yet to develop a vaccine for malaria, probably the biggest health issue currently in the third world.

I said it was a personal choice... good shit. I didn't say Im anti vaccine but as each year goes by more and more vaccines are recommended. Vaccines and medications are big business. They make more off people by "aiding symptoms" than they ever would in actually finding or releasing a cure. If people want to pump themselves full of the newest vaccine out there... great! Before putting Gates on a pedestal Id recommend reading and understanding all of what hes hoping to accomplish.

If you think that just because you're vaccinated you're safe from said disease, you're wrong. Albeit they lower your risk but its not a cure all. I don't care who you are... before someone injects you I'd suggest learning about it... side effects, frequency needed, etc. I think theres a difference between immunizing for polio and HPV, as an example. In my mind, one is very important and the other is not... for me personally.

And if someone refuses a vaccine for HPV, what right do you or the government have to cram it down their throat anyway? Its about personal choice... what I find a little ironic is a group based on personal choice and lifestyle being so not for personal choice. Lol.

Before I get slammed Ill reiterate again for the hearing impaired... I'm not anti vaccine but I am selective. Do I feel in order to enroll into public school children should be vaccinated, sure. If a parent chooses to not immunize, thats on them as their child is taking the greatest risk. They're little germ carriers! But to permit a government requiring vaccines is an incredibly scary thought to me and thats not control I'm interested in losing.

When your choices dont affect me, I am all for you making your own decisions.

And if big pharm was really only interested in creating chronic conditions why make vaccines at all?

The strains of HPV the vaccines protect against, and by all data they are amazingly effective and almost without risk, cause genital warts and cervical cancer. So unless there are no women in your life you'd rather not see get cancer it is important to you.

Do you know what herd immunity is? Do you know that some people are legitimately unable to receive some or all vaccines due to things like allergies?

If little Timmy doesn't get vaccinated because his parents choose not to and catches measles and passes it on to Sally who cannot be immunized because of an allergy and Sally dies what should happen to Timmy's parents?

Yeah, infecting somebody else with an infectious disease is always a purely personal choice that has no impact on any other fucker, isn't it?

I went to school with Irony, and I won't see her abused by Americans.

tazzygirl -> RE: Irony (8/27/2013 12:30:37 PM)

How anyone can see vaccines as a "personal choice" lide deciding where to live is beyond me. Public health is the concern of everyone, not just a select few.

mnottertail -> RE: Irony (8/27/2013 12:31:41 PM)

We're not going to rape your daughters, nor set your cities to the torch, but we will have our way with your language, and we are here to despoil it.........

Man, I like your elliptical training. All the ones I've seen have been much more difficult...

I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that. We have something in common!

Joan51 -> RE: Irony (8/27/2013 2:41:30 PM)

When did the rights of the individual supersede the rights of the community as a whole? This is a safety issue pure and simple.

mnottertail -> RE: Irony (8/27/2013 2:42:34 PM)

It never has, not in our us constitution anyhow.

Obviously no one who has the slightest memory of past epidemics thinks this way. Just look how many died from flu in the UK alone, prior to vaccines.
