Ted Cruz 'Not Convinced' Obama Wouldn't Defund Obamacare

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said Sunday that he is "not convinced" that President Barack Obama wouldn't defund his own signature health care law if Congress gave him the opportunity to do so.

"I am not at all convinced of that," Cruz told Candy Crowley in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union."

Cruz and other Senate Republicans are pursuing what's known as a "continuing resolution" that would defund the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, as a condition of funding the government. Cruz, in particular, has been leading the charge, doing town halls on the subject and being featured in "Defund Obamacare" television ads.

Of course, the president is not expected to sign a bill that would eliminate or gut his landmark legislative achievement. It's highly unlikely any such bill would even make it to his desk, since Democrats still control the Senate. But that hasn't stopped the House GOP from voting 40 times to repeal the law.

"The president is never going to sign the bill that defunds Obamacare," Crowley told Cruz in the interview.

"You know, you may be convinced of that," Cruz said.

"You're not convinced of that? This is what they consider his signature achievement of his administration so far," Crowley responded.

Cruz conceded that the movement in the Senate to defund Obamacare doesn't yet have the votes needed for the continuing resolution.

"We don't have the votes right now," Cruz said. "This fight is likely to heat up in the month of September."

If it were to get through the Senate, that would mean that, at a minimum, 14 Democrats would have to vote to defund it (assuming all 45 R's and the lone I vote to defund), otherwise 60 votes won't be garnered. That would be almost a quarter of the Democrats in the Senate.

I could see it as a possibility, though I highly doubt he would sign it. If the defunding legislation passed the Senate with 70+ votes, I could see him signing it, too (provided the House passes it with a 2/3+ majority, too), assuming there would be enough support to over-rule a veto.

I wonder if we (in the US) will actually see full implementation of Obamacare (remember, he did say he takes no issue with it being called that) while he is in office.

I cannot see the bill even being taken up by the Senate. It would be prima facie dogshit.

That would be a hindrance to it's passage, no doubt...

How many more weeks until the 2014 elections?

Yes, I do believe they'll threaten to shut government down. I also expect them to back down, much like a yapping chihuahua when you actually take a step towards it.

Edited to add the smiley.

Happily, it is not the Abner Louima bill to repeal Obamacare, but it is trying to be.

It is horse shit sold to the American people as chocolate. Cruz can say he tried to offer a budget but it was rejected, instead of actually working across the isle to get a balanced budget passed. All the politicians are doing this in some form, offering a supposed budget that they know will not pass.
