Perhaps CM is not the BEST place to ask this question since we are a bunch of freaks, but here goes. [:D] Due to one of our band mates having less availability, 3 of us are forming another group to keep up with gig demands. Our genre is acoustic-eclectic traditional/world/original music. A name suggested was "XYZ (member name) and the F Holes" (trademark/logo: violin/viola/cello/bass F hole.) Those who know our sense of humor think it's hilarious, but since we perform for all types of situations including senior, skilled nursing and developmentally disabled residences we wonder if it might hurt our chances for conservative-setting gigs. What do you think?

I think that most people have no idea what an F hole is and it would hurt your bookings.

I agree, I think there'd be all sorts of places that wouldn't hire you with that name. It's to much of a 'inside baseball' name for most people to get.

I agree with this. The humor of the name would escape the majority; even those in the know would probably balk at hiring a band with that name.

As a musician I have had the whole band name debate, discussion, browbeating, ego flaring, monopolizing, puke inducing craptastic time of choosing a name, more times that I care to remember. My theory is after the band the Butthole Surfers, pretty much any name is OK if your target audience will accept it. A polka band named Rancid Pig Guts may not go over as well as The Beer Barrel Band or some such thing. Of course if you were playing death metal a name like Fuzzy Bunny Slippers just doesn't have the same impact as Bloody Highway Massacre. Your target is an older crowd that likely will be more receptive if your band has a simple name and doesn't have anything that they will have to ask someone what the fuck it means. Willy Joe's Minstrels for example, or Sam Walters' Quartet. I am thinking the older crowd won't go for Debbie George and the Vomiting Bile Retards. But I may be wrong.

I agree with the others, it's a great name, but not appropriate for soem of your venues. How about something like "Fret Work" ??

No frets on stringed instruments that aren't guitars or "guitar-type" basses. I think, based upon some of your venues "F Holes" might not go over well. I'm not one to be a nay sayer without suggesting an option so ... Using "F holes" as a font basis, why not: "So-So"?

I thought the f holes were made with a fret saw and are therefore fret work. I'm wrong?

"F holes" can be done with fret saws, coping saws, hack saws and little small Dremel saws. Any kind of a small, fine toothed blade with starter holes will do nicely. The trick about it is to go very, very slow so you don't tear up the thin wood around it.

Thank you for the explanation. But is that called fret work if it's not on a guitar? Sorry to be so picky, I really, really, like to know the true meaning of words and phrases like this.

For those that do not know, frets are little bands of metal that are imbedded on the neck of a guitar or similar instrument. They are cut into the neck with a fret saw and then basically tapped into place. So, fretwork is not what an F hole is. An F hole or sound hole helps the tone of the instrument have a bit more depth and richness that comes from the inside of the instrument. Believe this or not, not much sound comes from them, what the F holes also do is to allow the sound board of the instrument to vibrate a little more freely and thus makes the instrument sound better. For instance the violin, viola, cello and double bass has the bridge mounted between the F holes which picks up the vibrations of the strings and sends it down to the soundboard. Without the F holes it would change the properties of the sound, and while it is common with electric instruments to not have those sound holes, they are amplified electronically and don't need much natural tone help. Hope that makes sense.

Everybody, thanks so much for your input. I thought "XYZ and the F holes" might be a bit over the top for our venues. But your discussions have given me an idea to present to the mates: Fretless. It has more than one meaning, and with some band tension going on right now, I hope it would be a self-fulfilling prophesy. Btw, most of our instruments ARE fretless: 5-string violin, cello, fretless bass (electric and stand-up), melodeon, piano, accordion, various percussion including an expertly played bitchin' cajone. The only fretted instruments are mandolin, bouzouki, guitar and uke.
