I have a technical background 12 Years Paid professionally and then another 6 where I did it for friends, family strangers who slipped me a few buck under the table, cooked me a meal etc.

But I've encountered something that I don't understand the rational behind or at least technically.

I have a external hard drive, had it now maybe five years or so, 1 TB Western Digital. I plugged it up and it didn't respond. I was like about to die, I have all my "Non Standard" software, Movies etc on it and use it to back up my system. Well it lit up and acted normally.

I got out my netbook and connected it and lo and behold it loaded up and I had my External. But the Desktop would not load. Well, I called Western Digital, and talked with their techs, I figured even if they charge me It would be worth the money to recover my data.

Long story short, they had me plug directly into the house power and it loads on my desk top, it had been working for years through the power strip, and it works on the other computer through the power strip.

WD couldn't explain to me why that this is the case. is there anyone out there who might know why it is?

caps getting a little boiled, my guess, cant take the extra bit of resistance in the strip.

Is all the strip connections and screws tight, in and out of it, all contacts clean?

Lotta pop spilled in them things usually, and much debris, and they get kicked around and connections loosen.

And them bitches need amps to get to proper speed to make them work on the kick up......they falter, they go casters up.

Back to basics: Did you try a new powerstrip?

If you did with the same results, sorry, that's all I got.

Your power strip may have lost the ground.

A lot of the WD external drives can sense phase to phase or phase to ground leakage and lock out.

I have a 2tb I had trouble with this and pulled out hair trying to figure out why it would work with one outlet and not the other. Some also just don't like the flavor of some power supplies. Think of using the external when camped in the RV and it refused to work in one campground but worked fine in the next.

I ended up getting a generic power supply instead of the smart brick that came with the external.

Get a new power strip. If the power strip includes a surge protector, then the surge protector did its job and it fried instead of the computer.
