compes -> RE: NEW TECHNOLOGY! (11/16/2004 11:51:11 PM)

Speaking as an Electronic Engineer, all around geek, and someone whose job is to design video systems for Big Brother and his pals, I'm constantly amazed at what standard camera systems can do. Never mind the satellites. Most people don’t bother to look closely at the ceilings, or 40 or 50 feet up the side of a building in the middle of downtown. Shopping malls, box stores, main street, all have cameras on ‘em. And the technology? A standard camera system sold today is good enough to easily read your T-shirt from 100 feet up. The better systems can read the fine print on your Rolex wrist watch from the same distance. (Optical zoom. Don’t confuse that with the cheesy Hollywood digital zoom special effects.) As for hidden cameras – well, the company I work in doesn’t make ‘em, but it’s part of my job to know about them. Basically EVERYTHING is fair game for a hidden camera these days – they are about the same size as twenty cents in nickels, stacked up. They’re put in everything from Teddy Bears to EXIT signs, and are frequently worn by certain people in jewelry. Music stores love them installed in CD playing boom-boxes; which are placed strategically in the CD isle. Add all of this together with object tracking, facial recognition, and behavior prediction software – and it’s enough to make anyone just a little paranoid. Best of all, anyone who has the money can purchase any of these systems. The government, corporations, Mom and Pop stores, and your next-door neighbor. Big Brother can be anyone who can pay the freight. Compes
