Google today aquirred keyhole software. This is awesome.. Check out Google.com a free 7 day trial is offered. What this does is allow you to plug in any address and a statilite camera zooms in on that location. I just tried it. Could see my trash sitting out on the front curb waiting to be picked up.. Talk about awesome!.. Anyway.. I had to share. No off to spy on my old house in another state.

WOW, that's a bit scary to me. Just think, now ya never know who's watching you. [:)]

proudsub -> RE: NEW TECHNOLOGY! (11/16/2004 4:05:07 PM)

Well anyone spying on this house will get a thrill when we're in the hot tub.[;)]

sub4hire -> RE: NEW TECHNOLOGY! (11/16/2004 7:46:22 PM)

Only problem is most photo's are a year or two old. At least of the 5 address's we tried.

I heard that is because of the new security measures after 911. So Proud and everyone, nobody will ever be able to spy on you close enough to see you in your hot tub.

Nvernilla -> RE: NEW TECHNOLOGY! (11/16/2004 8:06:21 PM)

well what scares me about this is what is it the set up for? I think its welcome to the world of big brother my friends he doesnt even need to worry about next election

Speaking as an Electronic Engineer, all around geek, and someone whose job is to design video systems for Big Brother and his pals, I'm constantly amazed at what standard camera systems can do. Never mind the satellites.

Most people don’t bother to look closely at the ceilings, or 40 or 50 feet up the side of a building in the middle of downtown. Shopping malls, box stores, main street, all have cameras on ‘em. And the technology? A standard camera system sold today is good enough to easily read your T-shirt from 100 feet up. The better systems can read the fine print on your Rolex wrist watch from the same distance. (Optical zoom. Don’t confuse that with the cheesy Hollywood digital zoom special effects.)

As for hidden cameras – well, the company I work in doesn’t make ‘em, but it’s part of my job to know about them. Basically EVERYTHING is fair game for a hidden camera these days – they are about the same size as twenty cents in nickels, stacked up. They’re put in everything from Teddy Bears to EXIT signs, and are frequently worn by certain people in jewelry. Music stores love them installed in CD playing boom-boxes; which are placed strategically in the CD isle.

Add all of this together with object tracking, facial recognition, and behavior prediction software – and it’s enough to make anyone just a little paranoid.

Best of all, anyone who has the money can purchase any of these systems. The government, corporations, Mom and Pop stores, and your next-door neighbor.

Big Brother can be anyone who can pay the freight.

This is Keyhole's answer to the FAQ "When were these pictures taken?":

quote:

Keyhole continuously updates its database with the average age of imagery ranging from 18 to 24 months. Imagery can vary in age from as new as 2-3 months to as old as 2-3 years. Keyhole is increasingly taking advantage of satellite imagery to update the Keyhole database more aggressively.

So it's not really useful for spying. Still, it COULD BE a fantastic resource. Just one obvious example: archaeologists use aerial photographs all the time to try to find hints of ancient foundations, riverbeds, and so on. So the idea that you could just plug in a place and see a satellite image of it is terrific. The problem is that Keyhole doesn't seem to have such applications in mind; instead, they're focusing on metropolitan areas. I guess their idea is that we'll all visit virtual Paris and imagine ourselves walking along the Rive Gauche or something.

GoddessDustyGold -> RE: NEW TECHNOLOGY! (11/17/2004 10:12:38 AM)

Frankly, this makes Me a bit nervous. It seems there is more and more intrusion into O/our privacy on an almost daily basis. Now if this is set up so one can take a virtual tour of Paris, that might be a good thing. But the fact that this is being aggressively updated worries Me. I am aware of the cameras in stores. I have often been shopping and seen Myself coming and going on the TV screen in the electronics department. Not to mention the hidden cameras most businesses have already for security purposes. What a world W/we live in.
Perhaps someone can answer this question. I recently heard that the "Scientific Atlanta" cable boxes many of Us are required to have in our homes now in order to have any cable reception (and in some areas, I lived in one, any tv reception at all) actually have camera chips in them and allow viewing of U/us in O/our homes. True or not? Technology there, or not? Being currently used or just preparations in place for future use?
Welcome to the digital age, folks. I am as guilty as anyone in using online banking and shopping for convenience. And My ATM card gets very regular use. But should I be doing this? I question it all the time.
It really is only one short step from "security" to abuse and breach of privacy.

Not.

The technology is certainly there. It's been here for years.

Not by your local cable company.

Well i'm dissappointed to learn that the photo's arn't live. In my brief snopping I was able to determine it wasn't accurate. My brother address pulled up a house 5 houses away. Was hoping it would be something live. I agree the lack of privacy bugs me a bit, but the voyour in me is secretly pleased.

TaurusMCMLVIII -> RE: NEW TECHNOLOGY! (11/18/2004 11:24:25 PM)

Wow! That is so cool! I intend to try it right away. Even if it isn't a live feed (which I didn't think it would be) or the pic is old and it's not totally accurate, you have to admit it is still pretty cool.
I was wondering though of the limitations. Since it stores a single photo of every address, that would be one hell of a hard disk! LOL

sub4hire -> RE: NEW TECHNOLOGY! (11/19/2004 2:43:20 PM)

Some of us do look at all of those cameras. You know the average bank has something like 3000 I heard? I may be guestimating a bit high. It has a WHOLE LOT. Regardless. Much more than you see.

In one of my jobs I design schematics. Totally irrevelant. Regardless it puts me in a lot of stores back offices. I get to see a lot of different camera systems and set ups. The most technical I have seen so far is a popular restaurant supply store here in California. They have 335 cams per store. They are all motion cams. A rat can run across the store and be on camera.
The set up in the office you can view up to 18 cameras at a single time.
There is absolutely no reason in the world shoplifters would still exist if we had enough manpower to watch the cams already in place.

On a side note. Year's ago I went to some website someplace where you could zoom in on your own house. It isn't new technology it's just been brought to the forefront once more.

If only they put it to good use. If my house got broken into pull up the satellite pic. Solve my crime for me?

makes you wonder what technology will be in another 25 years or so...

I'm curious Gloria, do stores have cameras in dressing rooms and restrooms? I read somewhere that in dressing rooms they sometimes have them in the mirrors and to always dress with your back to the mirror.

I know many have people behind the mirror's in the dressing rooms. I cannot say for certain if they have camera's. I'd assume so. I'm pretty sure there is some obscure law out there that waves your rights when you enter a dressing room. I mean, think of the shoplifters if they didn't have some way to patrol them.

I've known of a few stores that do indeed have camera's in restrooms. Can't say for certain about all. I do make it into a lot of stores but there are a whole lot more that I don't make it into.
