cloudboy -> How do you react when..... (8/31/2013 7:53:47 PM)

This is a pattern I've noticed. I'm sure you've seen it too.

New OP starts a thread asking a question.

How do I tell my girlfriend about X.

I'm looking for slave meat to suck my cock... and do chores... how do I find her and break her in....

etc.

One post goes up from the OP and that's it. The end result is the regulars talking amongst ourselves. Usually it peters out after 2-3 pages unless there's some red-meat sub theme like "cheating."

How do you react to this?

------

Somewhat similar to the above are Naughtynick's series of anti-feminist topics -- usually trying to position men as "victims" and women as something unflattering and selfish.

Here I just try to stay away altogether.

What makes you think twice about posting at all on a thread? When do you tell yourself "there's no point in going there."

[ETA examples below..]
Could you provide a couple of examples please?

There are a couple of threads in the General section which would seem to be the complete opposite of what you describe.

See...
Would appreciate advice if anyone is willing to help me out.

No, he's right.

I've seen quite a few threads like this. They post once, maybe twice and then pooft. off they disappear.

Maybe if you comb'd (lol) your eyebrows from your eyes, you may be able to see those threads! [:D]

crazyml -> RE: How do you react when..... (8/31/2013 8:07:51 PM)

OOOOh... ok, sorry I misunderstood the OP.

Yeah, there are quite a few threads where the OP posts then disappears.

I thought it was a suggestion that the regulars didn't answer the OP.

Sorry Cloudboy, my fault for misunderstanding.

[ETA..]

And... getoutnow... the eyebrows comment was harsh. I love my furry eyebrows.

So to the OP... how do I react... I just move on and forget about it.

I would say that in some cases, threads like this are genuinely interesting and useful, even without the particpation of the OP.

How do you react to this?...

It doesn't bother me when an OP disappears. I post mostly because I enjoy it, not to help others. I like discussing ideas. The people presenting them are background. I post if the thread has any ideas worth discussing. I go out of my way to try to find those ideas, even if it means exploring a tangent. An unpromising thread often morphs into a meaty one when people take the trouble to look at things from a different point of view, or introduce discussion material. Often times the tangents prove far more interesting than the original topic.

Usually, when there are no interesting ideas to discuss.

Did you see my post above (the one where I apologised for misunderstanding your op?

So in this one the OP got some really good advice from a group of regulars.

Sure it devolves into the rather typical findomme debate but, the first couple of pages are on topic.

But if the OP read the posts the advice would have been useful, and if other people with a similar question were to read it, they'd get value from it.

Hmm.. The OP here is "Hello, does anyone know how to find a Mistress who would sincerely want to make this straight male take cock for real? thank you"

Frankly, it's a pretty fucking stupid question to ask - I mean, on a fucking dating site.

The entire op consists of a title "The serious posts, very little or no replies?" and the body of the post is "Very disappointing"

Come on... what sort of discussion do you actually expect this to produce.

This isn't a good example of the point you make - A rather naive question was asked, and answered pretty consistently

quote:

http://www.collarchat.com/m_4488297/tm.htm

Again, sure the OP was a no show after the initial post - but the thread isn't a complete waste of time

Another whining post on a very tired topic. What do you expect to come of this?

Ah A findomme thread. What do you expect?

The op is "What are subs looking for exactly?" Another question to which a perfectly valid response would have been - "Oh for fuck's sake... work it out for yourself"

But the body of responses was full of really interesting advice.

So...

Your examples fall into a few categories.

I think in some cases threads are started on a whim, and the people never return to them

In some cases threads are started that don't produce the answer the person is expecting

In some cases threads on very worn out topics are started and melee ensues

I don't see it as a problem - Most of your examples contained some really good advice and comment.

cloudboy -> RE: How do you react when..... (8/31/2013 9:23:58 PM)

That's a good attitude. Thanks for answering the question.

One thing that stops me is if I don't think I have anything to contribute. This is why I've avoided threads on Syria. That's above my pay grade.

If possible, I try to avoid feeding the trolls.

But back to your response, I like it. On a certain level the OP is irrelevant.

cloudboy -> RE: How do you react when..... (8/31/2013 9:25:48 PM)

No problem. I think sometimes it helps to just answer the question asked.

littlewonder -> RE: How do you react when..... (9/1/2013 7:56:15 AM)

how do I react to it? Neutral? Doesn't bother me? I dunno. It doesn't bother me one way or another.

DesFIP -> RE: How do you react when..... (9/1/2013 8:08:00 AM)

I'd rather they poof than come back to say we're all meanieheads because we point out what they're doing wrong.

If you ask for advice, then you damned well better be prepared to get it.

If what you really want is to vent and get sympathy, then ask for that. I am not a mind reader and even if I was, I wouldn't be using that skill on strangers.

It's nice when the OP comes back, but I don't think it's necessary - people can still learn and benefit from the discussion. Yes, I wish the OP would come back more often then they do, but it doesn't seem like that's going to change much since it's always been the same since I've been here. My reaction is to check out how the discussion is going, see if I have anything to learn, and add my 2 cents then regardless of if the OP is still involved or not. There are many people here that I like having the chance to learn from, so whatever they post on, I welcome the chance to read their postings.

I don't go there if it's a repetitive banging of the drum from someone who is obsessed with something, as per your example, and similarly if my answer will just add troll food. I don't participate if it's something I'm not interested in, or don't feel I can add anything of worth - be it informational or entertainment. I don't participate if I think the OP is being disingenuous. I don't participate in wank fodder, topics I am tired of, advertisements, or stupid-ass questions (subjective, I know). That's on a general basis, anything in that list can change according to my mood at the time.

kiwisub12 -> RE: How do you react when..... (9/1/2013 9:12:04 AM)

Its nice if what we reply to a thread is helpful to the OP. But really, most of us are here for entertainment and information, and really, the original posters of threads aren't necessary for those categories. It can be very gratifying if a poster says that something you have said is relevant or helpful, but not necessary.

so , really , yes, the OP can be irrelevant to the life of a thread. [:D]

MasterCaneman -> RE: How do you react when..... (9/1/2013 11:30:20 AM)

I think a lot if it is the OP wanting a question answered or just wants to start trouble. Nothing like dumping a bucket of chum in a shark tank to do that. I've noticed the OPs occasionally at the the top of their threads looking it, but never getting involved past the initial posting.

If I was really interested in hearing back from the OP, I would CMail them and say people had responded and invite them to come back to their thread.

I would have done this if Sheela had stopped posting in the middle of her breakup; normally I'm not interested enough to bother.

getoutnow -> RE: How do you react when..... (9/1/2013 11:57:50 AM)

I personally couldnt give a rats ass what happens.

I come purely for the entertainment value.
