So what BDSM city/community would you consider as one of the most diverse, open, inclusive, active and well just plain fun in the US?

Is there any one location that stands out in your mind?

I will name my top 2 in the US. I had several great learning and erotic experiences in Europe as well as but I will confine this to the US.

Number 2 in my book has to be the area ranging from Austin, Texas to San Antonio. In Austin as a member of the Group With No Name, I was fortunate to meet many, many folks with a wide variety of interests and fetishes. Really great, friendly folks but then again I think Texans are the friendliest folks in the US :)

Austin is also well known for its music and arts scene and the annual SXSW festival. My favorite music clubs there were Antone's, and the Continental Club, and earlier Liberty Lunch. I mention the music clubs because you could be out for a night on the town and run into several friends from GWNN. Very cool. That could make for a fun after concert party :) One of the highest number of live music clubs in the US.

They would have these munches either on or just off 6th St with 3-400 folks from groups within like a 50 mile radius. And that was a lot of groups. The politics that I have seen prevent such unity among groups in other cities just did not exist to the point where it prevented these type get togethers. There were all kinds of classes, seminars and various fun get togethers. A favorite of mine was the occasional linkup with a spanking group out of San Antonio.

One memory I have of the Austin BDSM scene that still brings a smile to my face is the advise we would get for the munches on 6th St to dress conservatively and avoid freaking out the locals. Then we would be sitting there and (ever been to 6th St?) looking out the windows at the real show :)

The number 1 city here in the US for sheer BDSM 'hotness' :) Atlanta Ga. That city, when I was there, had several dungeons and assorted play emporiums. Probably the most famous was/is The Dungeon. I was personal friends with the manager at that time and it was as well run as any in Europe. Clean, efficient with a diverse clientele. I have a story on my page called The Dungeon about one such trip there.

One aspect of that location that contributed to its 'hotness' was the fact that the burbs were full of gorgeous Southern Baptist ladies. Upscale, dressed to the nines, very often extremely conflicted...they would have these urges that according to their religious upbringing, were strictly verboten. I mean, this was something a good southern girl just didn't do.

Typically married vanilla, they were literally an explosion bottled up for the time being. Because of those conflicts I got stood up more than a few times. But when we clicked, it was hot and raging stuff! And then things steamrolled from there.

Sometimes they were brand new and wanted a safe introduction to the possibilities. That was by far the most common. They wanted to be taught in a safe, protected, encouraging environment. Can't help but smile at some of those memories. Wonderful stuff!

There were also a few that just wanted to 'recharge their batteries' every 1 to 3 months to remain in a vanilla marriage. These were great, fun, sincere people.

So what do you think would happen when they woud enjoy the experience as invariably they did. They would tell their friends they knew had the same inclinations. Word of mouth. Literally :) One more mature lady actually wanted me to meet het mother? And she was 55:)

Then there was the Southern Spanking Society. Sigh..I plan on writing about my experience with them soon, including the initial 'interview'. The first party I attended, in a huge Marriott ballroom, was at the same time sedate, yet extremely hot.

These are my thoughts on what I consider to be decent characteristics of a solid, supportive BDSM community.

So what city or community is number one in your book? And why?

I would probably have to say Atlanta as well. That has to do with it being the largest city that I have been involved in kink.

OP, I'm thinking that your time in Atlanta predates Mine. I can't say that I ever participated at any venue known as "The Dungeon." I have played a number of times at 1763 and Studio Eris. (I've also presented at both.) People from both establishments have had accounts here and during the time and we often had threads in the "Upcoming Events" section. There were some clubs that closed before I had moved to the state.

I have a different outlook as to My reasons for selecting Atlanta above the others. One being diversity of interests. Not only is there a lot of opportunities for engaging in BDSM, it also has a rich leather foundation. It's probably the city that has been able to support the most opportunities for diversity, managing to have more SIGS (special interest groups) than anywhere else that I have ever been. Rope, spanking, female-led, Dominant women of color, littles, submissive support, TNG. LGBT, and others. In addition to 1763 being the public club, it also is the home of the Atlanta Regional Munch, (ARM) the TNG group, B.I.T.C.H., (Being in total control of him/her) and many alternative lifestyle groups. The city is also the location of SELF, (South East Leather Fest) Dom Con-Atlanta, Twisted Toyland, Duckstock, and I'm probably missing the name of at least one con in there somewhere.

My home group when I lived in GA was AIRS. (Augusta Iron Rose Society.) Not far away was T3WD in South Carolina, which is also an excellent group. I tend to consider all of those in one because it was only a couple of hours from Augusta to go in either direction.

My second would probably be the Bakersfield group and their neighboring city of Fresno. Bakersfield isn't quite as big of a group as most people might expect it to be, but they have a fantastic 'family' feel to their munch group. It's been run by the same D/D couple that started it twelve years ago and these are some of the best folks that you would ever want to meet. TGIF (The Group in Fresno) has probably one of the most organized and educational groups going. (I've presented at both of these groups as well.) They have a very structured environment that, I feel, has it's members very much at heart.

Unfortunately, I don't know of much outside the greater Denver area. But we have:

two dungeons (Sanctuary in Denver and Voodoo in Colorado Springs)
munches in the Springs, Denver, Boulder, Longmont, Fort Collins, Greeley, and north Denver
ongoing bondage workshops (Denver Bound)
regular public parties at Gary's in Arvada, the House of Guilty Pleasures in north Denver, House of Pervana in Colorado Springs, and Scarlet Moons spanking parties in Aurora
a Pro Domme dungeon at Pavlova's
The Rack Room as a small dungeon
a swingers' club that occasionally holds semi-kinky stuff at Scarlet Ranch
an adult resort (mon Chalet) that offers dirty movies, suites, and a clothing-optional pool.

I do know that Rapid City, SD, doesn't have much - a monthly munch and play party.

I haven't had the chance to explore much myself, never been over the the states either. I've grown up in a pretty small town, been here all my life. I've been to London a couple of times and love the atmosphere, so really hoping to go more. I'm also off to uni pretty soon, it will be my first experience of living in a city. I've already checked and there are quite a few munches, couple of fetish/play clubs and a monthly Alternative Market and After party. So looking forward to seeing where it all may lead :)

San Fransisco has to be the number one city. It is the birthplace.

Florida has to be the number one state. More kink per capita than any other state or province on this continent.

Manchester, in ENGLAND.

Why is this question only targetted to the US? Talk about xenophobic.

Manchester is a wonderful city for BDSM because it has lots of events, a large number of kinksters and is small enough to get around easily to the events on public transport. It is also very good value for money, with most munches free and most play parties around £10. It also has the best ethos of any city I know, with very few discriminatory, ageist, sexist or homophobic events - most events are open to all.
