This is an oddball question in no way related to bdsm...

I was wondering about speech reconition software. I've read a heap of reviews, watched some youtube clips, and what I've found is that "Dragon" speech reconition seems to be the most highly regarded...

Has anyone here had any experience with modern speech recognition programs, what were your opinions and which do you like.

I've heard windows 8 has a good one.

Has anyone tried to interface with their computer soley through speech?
I actually know a quadriplegic whos employer set up his computers with Dragon.
But I only talk to him once in a blue moon, so thought I'd try my luck here.

A manager at my place of employment uses Dragon. He's dyslexic and it's easier to use that than go crazy trying to do type everything out, and then proofread...and then proofread again...continuing that cycle until he's crazy.

I recently asked him about it, and he said it's an awesome program. He's been using it for a long time, or so he says. Apparently, it learns your speech patters, and takes some getting used to.

I don't have personal experience... so that's all I got for ya. He gives a big thumbs up...

I had DragonSpeak 9, and my experience with it falls between absolutely hilarious to downright frustrating. It requires you to speak in what is essentially a monotone throughout the entire passage. I am a trained voice actor, and while I can do it, it's harder to do than my normal speech patterns. I got it when I went back to school because I couldn't type to save my life. After a couple of weeks of endless editing, I figured it'd be easier and cheaper to just learn how to type like the rest of the world. Extra bonus: when I was tutoring, I could always find the ones who tried to use SR software like I did. Ludicrous that they would try to turn their assignments in without editing. I wish I had some examples to show, but they were always horrendous pieces to read.

My experience with Dragon goes back but even then it was quite good. As hardware has increased the algorithms got a lot more sophisticated. At these point, the speech recognition built into windows works pretty darned well. Try it. What matters most is having a real microphone. Second, is being at least somewhat willing ot use that massive learning engine sucking up calories perched on your shoulders to adapt in minor ways.

Nope, but I have played around with all the text in a multipage document. But I still ran menus and whatnot with keyboard/mouse.

I've tried Dragon 9 a while back and it was hopeless.

I've had Dragonn 11 and now Dragon 12 - it's still just as hopeless.
I spent several days trying to get it to recognise simple stuff but it still screwed up... badly.
Maybe I should have spent more time with it but I really didn't have the patience.

I know the mic is ok as I chat with some people on various IM's and it works fine.
I'll have to wait until they get it right.... one day. lol.

I watched a tutorial on how to train dragon when it makes a mistake.
Seems like the more you train the better it gets.
Well hopefully anyway...

I can't try the windows speech recognition yet... My computer is a netbook that's so old it's harddrive is around 5gb...
I have an 80gb side drive... But still, I think it's upgrade time!

I need a more up to date laptop for work related reasons but, I also want to try some speech recog stuff as a personal project I've had in mind for a while.

So anyway, the netbook has XP so I can't try windows speech recog.
What do you think of it? Can you train it?

With the caveat that you're asking me to dredge up old memories regarding dragon and Win/XP, my memory, as stated, was that between training it and training myself I had no real issues.... for text entry. I never tried to use it for menu navigation and the like.

Insofar as freedom's response, I've seen this time and time again with all sorts of heuristics software... for instance handwriting recognition. Some people are more willing/able to adapt to the needs of the software than others. So some make it work and for others it's a complete cluster fuck. I also wouldn't doubt that extreme accents and the like mess with speech recognition. My speech patterns are very mid-west (which means pretty basic english) which may contribute to my success with such things.
