Status: offline 		Another thread started me thinking on food items that may well be toxic.

On apple seeds.... apple seeds are not usually considered edible by humans as they can cause some serious gastric upset. And most varieties have seeds that are exceptionally bitter.

Now, every hear the term "bitter almonds"? Those are roasted peach pits and are very toxic in quantity. Natural source of cyanogen (cyanide). Oddly enough, almonds are a relative of the peach but the seed is edible not the fruit.

Never, ever, let tomato greens get into your cooking. Tomatoes are a relative of belladonna and the greens are poisonous.

Oleander is highly poisonous. Tropical and sub tropical areas have several cases of poisonings a year due to young children trying to eat the colorful sweet smelling blossoms.

Rutabaga is toxic if eaten raw. It must be thoroughly cooked. (Luther Burbank was once charged with poisoning a man after recommending rutabaga.)

Anyone else have any gems of knowledge on edibles or not so edibles?

Roots, toxic
Berries, toxic
Older stalks and greens, you guessed it...toxic.

Status: offline 		Tansy, dried is a wonderful herb for fish or stews, the oil is toxic, it must evaporate.

Potato eyes and leaves are also nightshade as is belladonna (I hope I remember that correctly)
Rhubarb leaves are heavy oxalic acid (used to remove rust and blue gun parts, or bleach wood)

Look like blue berries but aren't. Nothing salad about it! I had to get my stomach pumped when I was a kid for eating those.

Status: offline 		hey.. rhubabarb stalks were great when we were kids.. we used to eat them raw, dipped in sugar, never liked cooked rhubarb.. maybe that's why I'm a bit weird...

Um, you do know that tansy can be used to stimulate abortions? And, it should be eradicated from pastures where you are grazing cattle if you want to assure calving. Wherever the pioneer women went, they planted tansy. I've suspected for a while that 19th century women did take control of their reproductive systems more that literature would have you believe.

Hill.the leaves off an older poke salad plant can be eaten safely...but only if you boil them,drain off and rinse the leaves and re-boil the leaves a second time. I've ate them several times like this, first in the Boy Scouts and at local wild game dinners.

Status: offline 		Potatoes can accumulate toxic levels of solanine. If you avoid green potatoes and potatoes that taste bitter or are otherwise gross, though, the dose is too low to do any harm. The occasional oops green potato chip is probably fine too, since it's a small piece and some of the solanine leaves the chip into the frying oil. But if you get a bag full of green ones and it's not from sour cream and onion flavor powder, don't eat them.

Domesticated almonds are not poisonous, wild almonds are poisonous.

And chalk up another one for rhubarb sticks dipped in sugar. We used to run (run!) out to the plants with knives (knives!) and a cup full of sugar, then cut a stalk or two, and go to town on 'em.

I only speak Spanish and English, so I'm not certain, but I've heard it said that "vegetarian" is an old Algonquin word for "bad hunter."

A good Kevlar glove, quite handy for using a mandolin/slicer as well, is a good solution. Just scrape the spines off while holding it in the glove hand.

But at least around here the Mexican markets tend to have it already cleaned. The same for the nopales.

Status: offline 		I don't know if anyone else has done this but I used a pocket butane torch for gathering prickly pears. Just blast the needles down then grab the fruit.
