A bill was passed to allow the top two candidates in an all-party primary, to face off in the general, regardless of party affiliation. In solid blue Cali, that resulted in lots of Dem-vs-Dem races. So the winning Dem was the one that favored the center more, attracting the moderate and conservative vote.

Unfortunately, the author didn't distinguish between fiscal and social conservatism. Some of the "conservative" stances the Dems are taking are dictated by fiscal austerity rather than ideology.

Yeah, I'd be the one voting for people who support social liberalism and fiscal conservatism. It's never been my belief that those two things are mutually contradictory despite what the red/blue team might want me to think.
