In a shocking development, the Little Rock school district has handed down a dress code for teachers:

The school district in Little Rock, Ark. has announced plans for a dress code that will require teachers to wear underwear. ~Source

It doesn't say why, and I'm not sure I want to know, but the teachers union strongly opposes the rule.

Honk if you blinked.

I'm shocked and appalled that any organization would insist that any group of people wear underwear, that happen to be in the public eye.

How is this news?

and why would a union dispute this?

I'm going to guess that some teacher was wearing a skirt, bent over and guess what? No undies.

Maybe this is my Britishness showing, but I would fully expect just about every job I work at, especially one like this, to have a fairly strict dress code. It's not like the rule is JUST about underwear, it's a pretty comprehensive list of what is appropriate to wear.

I've certainly worked in at least two places (one private, one local government) where I would've been sent home to change if you could see a brightly coloured-bra through my shirt.

Now if they're holding spot-checks to see if teachers are wearing knickers, then they have a valid complaint. Otherwise, grow up, professional jobs require professional attire. I surely wouldn't be impressed if my kids teachers were wearing flip-flops, cut off jeans or slogans about drugs either.

I'm betting lw nailed it. Rather than institute a dress code for women only, they wrote it like this so it wouldn't be viewed as sexist. But yes, if a male teacher walked in wearing a kilt on Robbie Burns Day, he needs some underwear so if he bends over in front of the class, he's still decent.

I have a feeling it is more a consideration for the climate. August, 95F+ temperatures. Now air conditioning in classrooms.
Would you really want a padded bra and granny panties on? Do they require male staff to wear neckties?

I'm flashing back to the 60s where a new young elementary school teacher was threatened with dismissal for showing her knees. I think I'd rather go back to say, 1750 for a dress code. There could be absolutely no hint of an ankle showing but bare teats would be fine or even encouraged.

So how would the rule be enforced? Would they do spot checks? Maybe they'll put in those scanner machines like they have at airports.

Bwahahahahahahahahaaaaaa

Ok, that was funny as hell. I'm sure some special software could measure clothing coverage at various key points along with performing pretty competent underwear recognition.

All in all I don't understand the problem. Most of the places I've worked at in my life had some sort of dress code.

I think we do need unions. I just think we need unions working on important stuff not underwear.

It's partially unenforceable, but you could only get away with not wearing underwear by choosing clothes that aren't so tight and/or short that they show the underwear's absence, so it might not matter.

The new dress code looks sensible for all but the most casual of workplaces - in fact, it allows much that wouldn't fly in most offices - so I'm not sure what the complainers are upset about. Are they fighting for the right to look unprofessional at work? That seems like an odd stance.

It's a lot less restrictive than any job I've ever had, with the exception of factory work. There it's hard to compare because the dress code was safety-based, so some parts were stricter and some looser. Tattoos and shirts with beer logos were allowed, but no jewelry except wedding rings and small studs in piercings, and our footwear had to be either work boots or normal closed-toed sneakers.

As long as it was only required of male teachers....I'd vote for my taxes to increase.

They demand people to wear underwear, what a horrible development
What will be next?
A demand for the same males to wear a fedora, and the females to wear a lockable collar - oh see what happens when I get carried away here. :D

Perhaps we should go back to yesteryear when it was customary to wear a uniform appropriate for the occupation you were working at.

Heck, with traditional academic gowns for teaching it wouldn't matter if you were wearing any clothes at all.

Tongue firmly in cheek,

Let's just hope that if this is a school for boys....this only applies to the male teachers.
