And that would be the end of your thread jlf, because the problem with the US is that you don't HAVE any gun control.

Desire, you're right there.
States and the feds put honest gun owners through hoops, registration, training, background checks, "permits."
Yet, you mention all the shootings in Chicago, Detroit and Washington D.C. to the politicians and it's,......."crickets."
The whole country knows how bad it is in Chicago for two years now! Every month they break the record for shooting deaths.
President Pantload knows but he'd rather crack down on some rat bag country 8,000 miles away and he's FROM Chicago! (Well,....ok....I'll get back to you on that.) Just who's "president" is he?
Mentally ill people with guns,....Nothing!
Illegal Aliens with guns,....zugats!
The govt's won't enforce our gun laws or our immigration laws yet,....they want to make more restrictive laws to vex honest, law abiding gun owners probably because it makes them feel like their "doing something" about it when they're not!
How do we get our governments, state and local to stop going after the good guys and start going after the bad guys/mentally ill/ illegal aliens?
What do I do, write *another* letter to my state rep/congressman to see if I can get them off their well paid asses?
I've carried a gun for going on 30 years now and it's always stayed in it's holster.

Children tend to be fascinated by guns. When you come home and unload your weapon, they're watching and learning how to load it.

They pay attention to where you keep your guns, if they're hidden, they know where, if kept locked, they know where the key is.

A normal child is so fascinated with guns it's only a matter of time before they take whatever steps are necessary to get their hands on one.

Thinking a gun is safe from small children because it's up high is not dealing with reality.

Guns and small children just don't mix. If you have to have them, they should be unloaded, locked up, and with a combination lock that you are very careful about.

No, it doesn't make the gun very accessible, that's the point.

By the time a child is 8 or 9, they can be introduced to some basic gun safety. You still have to keep the guns locked up, but if they have the basics drilled into them, they are less likely to have an accident.

Younger than that.
Demystify them.
Tell the kids they can see and touch the guns anytime they ask.
Make the safety rules part of the routine till they don't think of them as rules so much as just the way things are.
I have taught nearly a dozen kids this way, no accidents or near them.
Some scary moments from kids who's parents "protected" them from guns and never let them touch one. My mother was nearly shot by a cousin who didn't know the difference between a toy and the real thing.

BamaD -> RE: toddler shoots self in Yellowstone (9/12/2013 10:48:59 PM)

I've been robbed and broken into on several occasions.

I'm not a wimp. The fuck with me being a 'victim.' I deal. I change patterns and methods and neighborhoods. I don't get robbed anymore. Simple.

You give them your money and run away
I keep my money and they run away simple.

Edwynn, I am not implying anything negative about you.
I suspect that you find the thought of harming another human so offensive that the problems of moving pale in comparison.
I, on the other hand, cannot abide the thought of allowing the dregs of society dictate my actions.
I do not fear them so they fear me.

Gun control means using both hands.

I thought you were supposed to lean back and to one side, gun arm pointed straight out and gun turned on it's side? [8D]

That only works if you have a bandanna just at the top of your eyes.

MAINEiacMISTRESS -> RE: toddler shoots self in Yellowstone (9/13/2013 5:43:56 AM)

This incident isn't about gun control. It's about STUPID PARENTS. If it hadn't happened at Yellowstone, it would have eventually happened back at their home.

Some people just make REEEEEEALLY BAD PARENTS. They have no sense of protecting their offspring, no sense of murphy's law (what can go wrong WILL go wrong), no awareness of the everyday dangers around their child. It's only natural that their child fails to reach adulthood.

DON'T PLAY WITH GUNS can be taught at a very young age. I and many of My friends grew up before gun safes were a requirement. There were guns all over the house, leaning against corners, places where we sometimes would trip on them. I never once felt the need to PLAY with one, I was taught at an early age THESE AREN'T TOYS and I knew their purpose was for hunting and to kill animal pests. A bullet comes out the other end, don't EVER point it at someone. Even a toddler can be taught that, if they are raised in a sensible family where COMMUNICATION with the child is a primary focus. Also, as an added safety measure, Dad never left them LOADED, we all SURVIVED.

Stupid parents, well, let's face it, they are EVERYWHERE...taking their kid to a zoo and leaning the kid close to the big cat's bars for a closer look so he gets snatched...raising a toddler in a house full of pitbulls and leaving her unattended...allowing a toddler to cross the road alone to get the mail. Stupidity happens everywhere. Stop acting so surprised.

Instead of more gun control laws, we need PARENTAL STUPIDITY PREVENTION...perhaps in the form of required educational programs for all new parents. That way the stupid people can have offspring that survive childhood to eventually pass on their stupid genes for generations to come.

Probably. There goes the fortune I was planning to make selling "Guns don't kill people. National parks kill people." bumper stickers. Oh well.

Think about it. If this had been a child that gotten into a car and caused an accident, we wouldn't be blaming the car or the people that made cars legal. We would be questioning the parents.

Why do the pro gun keep pointing to Chicago and DC, their rate is and was much lower then many other cities, Detroit for some time did but New Orleans now holds that spot. Cities like Houston, Miami and Atlanta had higher rates. Oh I forgot, Obama is from Chicago and those cities with higher gun violence rate are in pro gun States, excuse me. FYI they did but the pro gun lobby/NRA stopped it.[:D]

Nosothro, right now I do believe that *Chicago* is the number one city for gun deaths.
And Pantload isn't "from" Chicago, he's from Hawaii, Indonesia, Kenya or wherever. Take your pick.

Hmm, the fact I have to register a gun when I buy it is no control?

How about the fact that I have to have a back ground check at time of purchase?

How about that simple fact that unless I have a permit, I cannot legally carry a firearm on my person?

As for open carry laws, while legal, it is generally frowned on.

I agree the back ground checks could be stricter, as it is now, they are looking for a criminal record of violent crimes and felonies.

But what the hell, you are probably more familiar with American firearms regulations than I am, me being a gun owner and licensed to carry and all.

It is not like I can go down to the local sporting goods store and purchase a machine gun. It is actually easier to buy a full sized working replica of a civil war cannon than it is to buy a fully automatic weapon. I know, I used to own a full sized working Napoleon.

Hell has frozen over. I agree fully with jlf.
