I'm also, in general, in agreement with the Heritage Foundations basic principles. While I definitely see American Exceptionalism as Spalding puts it, I can only shake my head and wonder wtf DeMint was thinking when he decided to write to Putin, and then, to write it with all the stupid, petty, and childish jabs he did. I think DeMint needs a new binkie, or his diaper changed. Maybe both.

Jim DeMint looks like a blind patriot. Talk of exceptionalism post IRAQ, Afghanistan, and the Great Recession should be toned down. We've also had our foot in many other debacles: Iranian coup, Chilean coup, Guatemalan coup, arming sociopaths in El Salvador and Nicaragua, the bay of pigs, and Vietnam. On the plus side are WWII, Yugoslavia, and the first Gulf war. Two of these involved a broad coalition of allies, and Yugoslavia was suppported by most of Europe. When we went it alone things usually turned out poorly.

DeMint epitomizes everything wrong with the conservative movement. Insular, uncurious, unduly confident and uninformed.

At the time of our Founding, we were the exception to the rule of governance being top down. That's the point of American Exceptionalism.

Under the likes of DeMint, et al, "American Exceptionalism" has come to mean "Do as I say, not as I do." Of course, that childish rant was red meat for the Base, which is probably why he wrote it. Don't be surprised if this turns up as part of a DeMint for President push later on. [sm=AttentionWhore.gif]

The USA was established to be different in the way power and governance is run. You can't say that about any other country, can you? Can you say that about any European country? My point is if your interpretation of American Exceptionalism is the correct one, the idea of American Exceptionalism is of historical interest only. It makes me wonder what people like the American Enterprise Institute and others are talking about when they invoke the term and apply it to today's USA in today's world. Their understanding and use of the term must be different to yours. If your view is valid then the AEI's and other's use of the term these days must be invalid, mustn't it?

I doubt that Putin is bothered by anything Jim DeMint says. He's the president of Russia, he's a martial arts expert, former head of the KGB, hunter, outdoorsman, ladie's man, wait a minute,...he could be (one of) the most interesting men in the world. So what do we have,...ERKEL riding his bike!
