“State of Fear” written by Michael Crichton.

An interesting look into the science/religion of global warming.

From the wiki:

The science behind global warming is speculative and incomplete, meaning no concrete conclusions can be drawn regarding human involvement in climate change.

Elites in various fields use either real or artificial crises to maintain the existing social order, misusing the "science" behind global warming.

As a result of potential conflicts of interest, the scientists conducting research on topics related to global warming may subtly change their findings to bring them in line with their funding sources. Since climatology does not incorporate double-blind studies, as are routine in other sciences, and climate scientists set experiment parameters, perform experiments within the parameters they have set, and analyze the resulting data, a phenomenon known as "bias," is offered as the most benign reason for climate science being so inaccurate.

A key concept, delivered from the eccentric Professor Hoffman, suggests, in Hoffman's words, the existence of a "politico-legal-media" complex, comparable to the "military industrial complex," of the Cold War era. Hoffman insists climate science began using more extreme, fear-inducing terms such as "crisis," "catastrophe," and, "disaster," shortly after the fall of The Berlin Wall, in order to maintain a level of fear in citizens, for the purpose of social control, since the specter of Soviet Communism was gone. This "state of fear" gives the book its title

Yeah, I haven't read that fiction, and wiki there hasn't read the book either.

Crichton is a denier. Why should anyone lends any credence to the babbling of an author who's only scientific expertise lies in writing bad science fiction?

Isn't he an M.D.?

Follow the money is the meaning. But most of it is in profits not fees.

"Politico-legal-media complex" sounds like a fitting term and an interesting concept to analyze, although that same complex probably existed side-by-side with the military-industrial complex, which wouldn't be able to exist without politicians, lawyers, and the media. In terms of creating actual "fear," though, the area of climate science seems like small potatoes compared with other political/social issues for which enough public fear has been stoked.

In terms of how it plays out at the street level, I would say that more people in this society fear second-hand smoke more than they fear carbon emissions or global warming. To most people, the more serious negative consequences of global warming won't occur during their lifetimes, so a lot of people don't really care all that much.

He was, but he never obtained a license to practice as a Doctor, and appears to have only taken a medical degree after he he switched from a liberal arts to a science batchelor's dgree over issues with a lecturer who noticed that he was plagiarising work.

A science fiction writer is talking crap pseudo science?
[sm=jaw.gif]
Who ever heard of such a thing?

PeonForHer -> RE: The State of Fear (9/17/2013 4:54:24 PM)

FR

Where are all the 'follow the money' guys on this thread - those who think that there's shedloads of cash to be made out of being 'green' and that this is the only reason people support it? Poor heroic Crichton, publishing a book that's anti-green! Nobody will buy it. Well, except the millions who fondly imagine that they've 'got the rocks to stand up against the lefty politically-correct climate change conspiracy', of course.

Shame, really. He didn't write good books, but they were entertaining enough if you wanted something brainless when lying in the bath with a hangover. But now, I think, 'What a dismal little prostitute'. Pfft.

LMFAO....... Crighton writes a book as science fiction, he even states as much in his afterword.

And here we have it, someone trying to prove Crichton wrong.......... FFS its fiction and the author said as much for those who managed to read Wiki all the way to the bottom.

"Crichton included a statement of his views on global climate change as an afterword. In the "Author's message", Crichton states that the cause, extent, and threat of climate change is largely unknown and unknowable." he goes on to suggest man keep researching the enviroment.

So what suddenly brought this nine-year-old novel to mind?

PeonForHer -> RE: The State of Fear (9/17/2013 5:29:29 PM)

Really? It's that old? I thought it was newly published.

PeonForHer -> RE: The State of Fear (9/17/2013 6:12:56 PM)

Phydeaux, you didn't mention that this is a nine-year-old book. Naughty!

What do you think are the chances of people reading it and believing the 'science' in it?

Er, OK, don't answer that one.

Phydeaux -> RE: The State of Fear (9/17/2013 9:42:17 PM)

I didn't suggest the book was written recently. But rather the recent discussions of global warming as a cause or religion brought it to mind, when I had almost completley forgotten it.

Personally, not my favorite Crichton but still I find he presents novel ideas and value him for same.

What's "novel" about the idea that AGW is a global conspiracy by all those sinister elitists who claim to know more than the average voter just because they've been to college?

Even when Crichton wrote the book, he was working from a very familiar list of denier talking-points.

Given that he died five years ago, that's unlikely: he might be a science fiction writer, but he ain't L Ron Hubbard.

Crichton could have been cryogenically frozen along with his manuscript, then recently reanimated as a zombie, whereupon he realised that his book should be shared with all mankind. Happens all the time.

mnottertail -> RE: The State of Fear (9/18/2013 6:40:30 AM)

Guest roles on The Walking Dead is on the table, I suspect.
