OohAahMrs -> White House 1814 Jewellery Box (9/17/2013 10:06:13 AM)

This is rather off topic, I'm trying to find information and more hopefully a picture of the Jewellery Box, stolen from the White House in 1814 and returned in 1939. I've searched lots of sites without any joy.

There is plenty of info out there, but I was unable to find a pic on the short search. The first 4 links have a good span of details

Does this help?

In 1939, a Canadian man named Archibald Kains sent a letter and a small jewelry box to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The letter stated that the jewelry box had been “looted or pillaged from the White House by my grandfather” 125 years earlier. Besides the Stuart painting, the jewelry box is the only item returned to the White House from that hot August night.

You have to scroll down a lot.

See page 16. The White House Historical Association describes it as a medicine chest, which may be why you're having trouble finding info.

You might want to drop a note to [email protected]. It's an unofficial but fascinating site, and the person running it clearly knows the place inside and out.
