Status: offline 		I have been following a new show on scify called "heroes of cosplay."

I found it interesting simply because I had no clue as to how much work went into the costumes, or what drives these people. I once thought these people were a bit weird, but realize they are just intensely into the things that inspire the costumes, be it video games, anime or movies.

IN one recent episode, Yaya Han was wearing a costume of Jessica Rabbit, wearing a boned corset, which was so tight she was close to passing out. The look was great, but I could never understood why women would pull the bindings on a boned corset tight enough to threaten breathing.

Tonight's episode had one woman cosplaying a boy, and bound her chest so that her nice breasts were not apparent. Again the tape was so tight that she was in danger of passing out.

The fact that she used duct tape was questionable.

So why do women insist on getting stuff so tight around their chest that they almost pass out?

Status: offline 		Well, firstly I would say that women in general don't. Otherwise there would be an epidemic of women passing out.

Beyond that, there will always be people who take an aesthetic to the extreme for one reason or another. We can only speculate their reasons. Because it makes them feel beautiful. Because it gets a reaction from others. Because they want to be special and gain notoriety in their circles. In the case of cosplayers, because it brings them a step closer to their fantasy world. You could also ask why people do extreme body modifications which also carry risks.

I was just curious.

I know that continually wearing corsets tight can actually rearrange internal organs.

As for body modification, I am waiting for genetic manipulation of a living organism to be perfected, then I want increased muscle mass, denser bone structure, genetic disposition to burning body fat doing any thing, adding 12 inches to my height, as well as the ability to see in the dark as well as being able to hear a heartbeat at 500 feet.

Status: offline 		in Cosplay, they are trying to get as close as possible a look to an anime character. Most of the characters are small breasted or none at all or trying to look like a male character if they are a female.

My daughter is huge into Cosplay, manga and anime and used to travel all over for the conventions with her for a few years.

Status: offline 		Same here, LW. One time, Lizard did not come back to the room when I asked her to. Massive panic attack and contact with the security team.

Now she only does local cons in Austin. Easier to get to and if I go with her, I get to have fun myself when it is pop culture at the same time (Sherlock and Doctor Who).

I really have next to no idea where they found those people. Cosplay is not as what they portray it as. Most cosplayers go only to local cons and put a lot of time and effort into the costumes. They are enthusiastic and in it for the fun. They are not a bunch of elitists led by a booth babe who got a boob job to better separate geeky men from their money.

I tuned into the Heroes of Cosplay wondering if I would see some old acquaintances that have been winning costume contests at cons for over 30 years. Nope, it looks like they recruited a group of west coast wannabe sfx artists.

Actually some of them are from Atlanta.

And from what I can see after some web searches, there are a lot of people that seem to have enough disposable income to run around the country and go to these conventions. Yaya Han is a frequent judge for contests, and yes she has her own merchandising company. Two of the west coasters are trying to get into the costume and prop design business, and one of the girls from actually used her cosplay designs to land an internship at Blizzard.

There is one girl that does a webcast on the subject and got into competing for street cred.

syfy is premiering another show called "Fangasm" soon that also deals with cosplay.

Dont get me wrong, I am not defending syfy for their cast choices, only one actually makes a living off cosplay, and it seemed that the cons they hit were not the ones I see splashed all over facebook and other sci fi sites I frequent.

I had started a thread in the past when I was surprise at just how wide spread this culture is. I knew it was big in Japan, and I know of a bunch of star trek fans that dress up for conventions, but the time, effort and skill it takes in some of these costumes are incredible. Vacuum molding equipment is not cheap, and hand casting medal for costumes seems a bit overboard.

I do leather work, mostly period pieces for western gun enthusiasts, but I would not dream of casting the metal decorations myself, it is much easier to order the stuff online.

There's really two ways to ensure that you are going have the corset look the way it's supposed to. One is to have the corset laced to the point of tight, (not tight enough to cause breathing restrictions) wear it for about an hour so the material and laces have acquired that 'just bit of expansion' (as all material does, leather, silk, ask a woman about her tight jeans) and then go about proper re-lacing. If you don't *have* that hour or are in a situation where you will not have an opportunity to have the laces done again, it's become a really common practice to over-tighten the corset in the first place. Whoever is lacing you up is taking you in an additional inch or two (meaning more than what the corset is designed to do to begin with) because they are anticipating how much "give" is to be expected. It's not good for the corset and it's not particularly good for you, but when timing is a factor, it's a real easy habit to fall into.

So you are saying suicide by corset? Or just lack of patience?

Status: offline 		Not exactly suicide. Might *feel* like getting the life squeezed out of you.

It's not always lack of patience. I've had times in the past that I've traveled somewhere to present and run across traffic or road construction that delays My arrival. I may not have a person available for re-lacing that hour later or that person is helping out several folks getting into various types of leather/costumes/whatever. I've had "wardrobe malfunction" such as scouring for laces. (Truth be told, I skipped wearing an over the bust corset this past weekend because it wasn't fitting right.) I'll cop to lacking patience on an occasion or two. Sometimes, it's just because I'm old and vain.

Status: offline 		My daughter and I traveled to quite a few conventions on the east coast for about 8 years or so....NJ, Philly, NYC, Rye NY, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, NC. She still keeps in contact with lots of people that she met there and she would spend all kinds of money and time making her costumes that were always awesome.

I was always amazed how much work those kids put into their costumes and acting.

Back when women routinely wore corsets, that used to happen all the time, it was common for ladies to 'faint' that often had to do with corsetry, when the wasp waist was such in vogue. It is like asking why chinese women used to bind their feet, it is why women will starve themselves to fit into that size 6 dress, it is about wanting to look 'good' or whatever.

Cosplay from my limited experience with it has a very strong vibe of people playing out hierarchy, and thus they will go to extreme lengths to be better than others and such, it to me moves from being fun to being almost war *shrug*.
