Breaking Bad is amazing. So is Dexter, The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, and The Killing. The usual suspects on the normal network TV stations should sit up and pay attention. The thing about each of the shows I mentioned is that it challenges the viewer to think, not to just sit there and be fed brain candy. A bit of an older series that you may want to check out that is brilliantly written and even more brilliantly cast is The Shield. The main character Vic Mackey played by Michael Chiklis is almost exactly like Walter White. Mackey tests the boundaries of your own morality and you aren't sure whether to love him or hate him. That is a show that sets a pace for itself from the first episode and never lets that momentum go until the final episode in the series.
