ODS seems to be getting much worse.

joether -> RE: Conservative opposition to drinking water (9/22/2013 11:02:14 AM)

Yeah because Rush Limbaugh's view matters to us Americans? The man is so opposite 'good health' it isn't even funny.

Phydeaux -> RE: Conservative opposition to drinking water (9/22/2013 11:24:30 AM)

You point to a liberal site and use that as evidence of republican outrage over water / ODS?

LOL.. no one I know knew of either Michelles statement, or rush's remarks.

This doesn't surprise me in the least, Dom, but you need to document better than that flakey site.

So Michelle Obama outright lies about the health benefits and extra energy one gets from consuming extra rations of water, and conservatives call her on her lie... And you guys are mad at Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck because they pointed out the fucking lie?

Gotta love loony liberal land...[8|]

Experts: White House H2O evidence murky

"Water is the first and best energy drink," Michelle Obama said.

public health experts contacted by POLITICO said they had concerns about the way the White House was framing the campaign. Those experts said the health benefits of increased water consumption are murky and there are no widely accepted criteria for how much water individuals should drink each day...

"There really isn’t data to support this," said Dr. Stanley Goldfarb of the University of Pennsylvania. "I think, unfortunately, frankly, they’re not basing this on really hard science. It’s not a very scientific approach they’ve taken... To make it a major public health effort, I think I would say it’s bizarre."

Goldfarb, a kidney specialist, took particular issue with White House claims that drinking more water would boost energy. "The idea drinking water increases energy, the word I’ve used to describe it is: quixotic," he said. "We’re designed to drink when we’re thirsty... There’s no need to have more than that..."

In recent years, news outlets ranging from NPR to Reuters to Mother Jones have run stories suggesting the claim that Americans don’t drink enough water or need to drink, say, eight glasses a day, is an urban myth...

The First Lady’s office referred questions about the scientific claims to the Partnership a for Healthier America, which pointed POLITICO to experts supportive of the campaign. None cited scientific studies showing, for example, that a modest amount of extra water could boost energy or stamina in an otherwise healthy person...

Some similar efforts overseas to promote water drinking have run into trouble. A Hydration for Health campaign targeted at European doctors came under fire for presenting shaky evidence to support ads on the British Medical Journal website...

"The more water we drank, the better we felt," Mrs. Obama said.

However, drinking large amounts of water can be dangerous and even deadly, if the body’s balance of electrolytes is disturbed. Marathoners, fraternity pledges and military trainees have died after drinking a large volume of water in a relatively short period of time. Some were likely overreacting to calls to stay hydrated.

Thanks Ken, that was fun.

Millions of dollars on a campaign to convince people to drink an extra glass of water a day. I mean. . . I could see the benefit of convincing people to exchange one soda a day with water . . . but just an extra glass of water? Nah. Not so much.

I always love how easy it is to get cons to take the bait.

Goldfarb is a extreme conservative who is a contributor to conservative websites including the Weekly Standard in particular in opposition to every health initiative proposed by the President. Of course he comes out in opposition to water.
http://www.weeklystandard.com/author/stanley-goldfarb

On a personal note I see the top Chicago area nephrologist every month and he is always bugging me to drink water instead of anything else (although due to my kidney failure he does want my intake strictly limited).

The amount of water needed to do injury to a healthy person is far more than a single glass.

DaNewAgeViking -> RE: Conservative opposition to drinking water (9/22/2013 6:23:17 PM)

Good work on the references, Dom. Isn't it wonderful how the Talking Heads pile on when the Administration says anything, even something as innocent as encouraging people to drink water? (NOT soda, SubRob, just good ol' H2O, just like the Good Lord gave us) That bit about water has been around longer than I have - drink 8 glasses a day, they said when I was in grade school, fer fuck's sake. You might think they're funny, Dom, but to me they're simply tiring.

I wonder which part is goldfarb being extreme.

Here is Snopes saying 8 glasses of water a day is a myth:http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp

Seems to me we don't need to promote junk science. We're doing enough of that with Global warming - oops climate change.

slavekate80 -> RE: Conservative opposition to drinking water (9/22/2013 10:54:26 PM)

Plain water might be healthier than soda, but for hydration purposes, the difference is trivial. Soft drinks are sugar and flavoring dissolved in... water. Your body doesn't care whether you drink a 12-ounce can of soda or 10 ounces of water followed by 2 ounces of soda syrup. If you drink water on an empty stomach, it becomes a dilute solution of stomach acid and enzymes long before it gets absorbed. It probably has more solute in it than a glass of Crystal Light. If you ate something first, the water mixes with your food and becomes soup.

There's nothing offensive about encouraging people to drink more water, and in fact it's a good idea for most people. But it's hardly going to turn our health around. The most realistic benefit is that you'll feel thirsty less often and thirst is annoying.

joether -> RE: Conservative opposition to drinking water (9/23/2013 1:13:12 AM)

"Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it"

-Edmund Burke-

Funny when the President states something that is common sense, conservatives try over and over to attack him on it. An that the President is basing the idea on a concept called 'science'. A concept most conservatives these days are completely ignorant on (i.e. Scientific Theories). An they are amazed when other groups support the idea, for the idea itself, NOT, because they are supporting the President. On topic, the issue is supported by many organizations in the health industry that can point out many reasons to drink water over other beverages. Do people lifting weights to increase muscle or 'get in shape' drink soda? Do NASCAR drivers drink coffee on the track during competition? Do you drink alcohol when walking across Death Valley during a heat wave? Its surprising that common sense is not very commonly found in multitudes of conservatives. Might be why many of them appear as winners or runner's up in the Darwin Awards....

If the President (or First Lady) came out and argued breathing fresh air is good for your body; conservatives would come out stating dirty and contaminated air is better for the body. Given conservatives 'track record' on these two and other issues, its a fair bet conservatives would vote opposition to this idea as well! Ignoring the science entirely for a delusional fantasy is not helping conservatives be seen as anything but lunatic-ish (if that's even a word...). Folks that behave lunatic-ish (ok its now a word, I've used it twice...) should not have guns (according to Wayne LaPierre and many pro-gun folks). Well, conservatives in high numbers have guns. So common sense would dictate we'd have to lock these people up, due to the fact they are behaving in a lunatic-ish manner AND have guns. How do we know these same people Aren't going to be involved in a mass shooting? Am I the only one that thinks this sounds totally insane by itself?

The First Lady is simply stating something that is well understood and known in medicine. Stifle your political hatred for her or her husband for two minutes, and have a glass of water. I know for many of my fellow Americans who practice the conservative philosophical feel that EVERYTHING must be political or evil if its coming from a liberal person. In this case, it is not. Your reading a huge amount of material that is simply not there! In the time it took you to read this post, you could have drunk a full glass of water. An you would have done a very healthy thing for yourself today.

If your drinking water, your not as thirsty as often. Not thirsty, not as tempted to drink soda or alcohol. An I don't mean this as some sort of conspiracy to deprive the soda/alcohol companies from fair dollar market. But that we have people in our society at all economic levels that drinking the soda or alcoholic beverage because they are thirsty is REALLY bad for them. Those on the brink of type two diabetes or any of the types of Depressions induced from long exposure to alcohol (for example) would be less tempted to consume either. This helps them and the rest of us in the long run (health and financial wise).

Given their blanket opposition to EPA action, I'd say that already happened long ago.

As long as a new mandate for water consumption doesn't pop up... [;)]

Water is good for you... we all know this. If somewhere, someone hidden under a rock is now tempted to try it, great! Lol

Yup, I could tell it was a highly intelligent site when I read this.

"And then maybe these haters of all things Oblackma would act like they have always been for taxing billionaires to pay for our abortion wars and we could get something done as a nation already?

Oblackma? Sounds like something a 5th grader would come up with. And then they expect me to take the rest seriously. Yea, right [8|]
