I mentioned in another thread that a "good priest should lean left".

But Pope Francis truly has folks on the left scratching their "collective" heads especially on his social messages. He has certainly remained quite true to his progressive, working man and poor economic roots and his vow of poverty in preaching in his financial message.

Pope attacks global economics for worshiping 'god of money'

I can't help but wonder what the value of all the property the Vatican owns is. My guess is that the church is anything but poor.

You guess correctly.
If Francis is sincere about this, he has several centuries' worth of looting to reverse.

Any sources for this canard? Or just another attack on the catholic church?

And you don't even have to guess.

FR. It appears that the Pope is saying that Christians should actually follow the teachings of Christ.

If the church really practiced what it preached, they would be selling off those assets to provide settlements to the children who have been sexually abused by their priests, and also taking a "no exceptions" policy toward aiding in the prosecution of those individuals.

More of the Pope acting like a Christian instead of a dogmatist.

Pope Francis said the Catholic Church must shake off an obsession with teachings on abortion, contraception and homosexuality and become more merciful or risk the collapse of its entire moral edifice "like a house of cards".

It's mine from another thread

The Pope is not the Catholic Church, only it's elected leader. Francis took a vow of poverty, not the Catholic Church. However, the Roman Catholic Church by any measure is the largest charitable contributor in the world, its not even close.

Did you mean contributor or receiver?

I do understand that. And I applaud his message. It just seems a little odd for me (since I'm not Catholic or very religious in the typical sense) to hear the Pope discuss the sins of money when the church he represents is not only wealthy but qualifies as its own country. Regardless, I realize it does exponentially more good with it's wealth than harm.

It's certainly contributed cock to a lot of minors over the years. Whether or not these were charity shags is still hotly debated, of course.
