you shouldn't give out any info at all about that poster, you've just narrowed the search parameters and you know what some people here are like...dog...bone

Might I suggest that certain posters who do nothing but post personal attacks and then report any responses be banned. Most of us are grown ups and do not report posts even when disagreements get heated. However it is clear that certain posters are using the mods to lock/delete threads they are losing.

I notice that you went on at some length about this...

quote:

ORIGINAL: DomKen

I have started reporting posts because the poster in question attacks freely and then reports all responses and I'm sick of it.

quote:

ORIGINAL: DomKen

Or certain posters could stop throwing insults and then reporting responses.

The question that arises is, what exactly are you complaining about?

If someone posts a personal attack against you, and then reports your response, wouldn't that be shooting themselves in the foot? When the Mods review the exchange, they're going to yank his post not yours. And isn't that as it should be? Unless, of course, yours was a personal attack too, in which case both posts would be yanked. But there too, isn't that as it should be?

I don't see how what you're describing could give cause for complaint unless in reality the post you responded to wasn't a personal attack, but yours was, earning you a gold-bordered cmail because the poster you attacked declined to roll over for your shit and chose to report your post rather than escalate the exchange.

Is that what you're complaining about?

K.

Actually in recent weeks it's happened repeatedly that my posts were pulled and I got chastising emails from a mod and the actual attacker did not. When I complain, several times, I am told the mods only review the posts reported. As a matter of fact when I then, and only then, reported those attacks did they get dealt with. That's why I know someone on your side, and I'm fairly confident who, is reporting liberals responses to attacks.

This is a fast reply to no one in particular and everyone all inclusive or any differing belief system:

The moderators do not owe you shit for an explanation of their actions.

... Trimmed for brevity ...

I am off the soapbox. The moderators will never keep people happy, so there is no point in trying to do so. If people cannot get along, there is a block button that is oh, so useful. And if people would start behaving, there would be no need for a report button. Hell, you actually all might find something you can actually agree on.

/rant

Precisely!

To the moderators, thank you for your hard work and time. My suggestion for assisting in this issue would not be popular, but may make your jobs much easier:

I believe that there is a feature on this site that does not allow the posting of specific words that are considered offensive and never acceptable to use. I do not know if this feature can be restricted to specific forums, but if it can, I would recommend adding to that list (only in P&R) certain words.

Some words are not helpful in promoting discussion and loss of which might reduce the amount of rancor amongst the participants. I know that I have a recommended list, but I am sure other posters would be happy to provide their own additions, particularly when certain posters become creative to bypass the filters.

I would start the vocabulary ban with:

Teabagger(s)
Nazi(s)
Nutsack(ers)
Asswipe(s)

Oh heck... just take any of mnottertail's posts and discount the articles, conjunctions and personal pronouns. That'll give you a good start.

Alternatively, I do know that programming can be written to replace certain words with different ones. For example, anyone trying to post the word "idiot", the programming would automatically replace "idiot" with "an otherwise nice person with whom I disagree". Imagine... instead of the "you are an idiot" that I might have intended, it posts as "you are an otherwise nice person with whom I disagree". Makes for much nicer conversation and fewer opportunities to insult and make personal attacks.

Yes, I know. We're all adults here and should be able to play nicely together without being treated like children. But honestly... Disneyland this ain't.

I believe that Chi has asked nicely that posters do not insult each other. I also believe that picking at, digging at or posting off topic would be against the rules as well.

Be nice, or I will not be nice.

Note: posters should not think that the standard for abusing the ticketing system is 46 reports in 24 hours - that just happened to be how many we woke up to.

Gee, I wonder if it had something to do with this. http://www.collarchat.com/m_4540577/tm.htm

FR,

Complaints are starting to come in for this thread. I would prefer to not moderate a thread on moderation, and won't be moderating this one myself, but the reporters do have a point about allowing a debate about the rules that breaks the rules.

Please knock off the nasty digs about each other.

If y'all are interested in having another unmoderated thread as Rho described above, let us know and we will discuss.

So how did you find THAT out???

FTR... I think out of the 1000's of things I have written I have got at most 3 gold emails and two were on the same subject.

This topic is now being locked so that posts can be reviewed and violations removed.

I take exception, FDD. i don't mind someone reporting a TOS violation, even if I am the one being reported.

My only problem is when a mod takes it out of context (as has happened occasionally) or allows a much more egregious violation to slide in the same thread.

But, again ... you can never have 100% agreement or perfection. "Close enough" has to be good enough.

This is incorrect.

Threads are closed to clean them or if there are three personal attacks from three different posters.

I disagree with this. They have to check every report and when you have some people who send a score or more at a time, sometimes the Mods just throw up their hands and close the thread. (which is what the whiny over reporter wanted in the first place.)

Many post have been removed. Some of them for violations and the others for being a reply or in a chain of replies that quote or lead back to the violation that was pulled.

Gold letters and administrative actions are pending at this time until a meeting with the administrative staff.

P&R will comply with the guidelines that all other sections comply with. If you find yourself in a tit for tat with someone you may wish to avail yourself of the hide feature as both may likely get moderated, just as two arguing children would be put in time out together.

Someone calling names or making you the subject of the post does not remove any accountability from replying in kind. A poster on here mentioned about accepting responsibility and that is what posters will do.

Chi has been more than nice and patient. I am neither nice nor patient. Everyone is adults, please act accordingly and with a modicum of maturity.

Disagree. It has been shown throughout the life of the internet, that where politics, religion or philosophy are discussed, you must have rules against flaming and such or you will not actually have discussions. It will just be flamefests.

You said this in the unmoderated thread and you were wrong there as now. Flamers were just ignored as they should be and the thread went on just fine. Flaming only works when they are engaged... you don't have to engage them...I don't.

quote:

Making things public just begs for the mob to harass someone that is trying to follow the rules

I am under no elusions that making those that report perceived violations public will ever happen and I do understand the reasoning behind making them anonymous. However making them public will reduce the number of frivolous reports. As for harassment just make that an automatic permanent band for punishment. That would end the harassment.

Gamma, when a female mod is writing a really, *really* severe reprimand to someone, is there a policy as to what she should be wearing when she writes it? Just wondering.

Ah, ye olde Kindergarten Rule. It doesn't matter who started it. Saves so much bother, doesn't it? After all, why should anyone take the trouble to sort out the realities of an exchange? I especially liked the part about how everybody is an adult, but since twue adults apparently never become angry or rude, anyone who does will be treated like a child. Gotta love it when people who are unpleasant and impatient think it's everyone else who needs to grow up.
