Kirata -> America's Cup Comeback! (9/25/2013 5:57:05 AM)

The USA has now taken 7 in a row to tie the series! The boats face their final race today.

Skipper Jimmy Spithill and his mates aboard Oracle Team USA are on the brink of finishing one of the greatest comebacks in sports history. An America's Cup that had the look of an embarrassing loss for software tycoon Larry Ellison's American syndicate comes down to a winner-take-all race Wednesday: Two 72-foot, space-age catamarans are set to make a final, adrenaline-fueled sprint around San Francisco Bay, on a five-leg course framed by the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. ~Associated Press

This was quite a Cup race.

http://blogs.kqed.org/newsfix/2013/09/03/oracle-americas-cup-penalty/

A cheating scandal: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/08/26/us-sailing-americascup-cheating-idUSBRE97P0LD20130826 - which resulted in "Oracle [with having] to win 11 races to emerge victorious, while Emirates will still have to win just nine."

Back on May 9th, a member of the Swedish team died in a capsize.

I miss the Cup being raced on boats instead of very expensive marvels of technology.
Somehow with each team doling out more than 100 Billion apiece, it just isn't as much fun to watch.

I couldn't agree with you more. It has become a race between boats that are specifically designed to avoid as much as possible any hull contact with the water! How ironic is that?

America retains the Cup.

162 years of evolution (a pictorial)

It is all about building the fastest boat, and it should be about the skill of the team of sailors sailing it.

Peeshaw - America wins? The boat only had one American on it. All the rest are foreigners.

Yep, America won - uh huh.

And yes, this is sour grapes. [:'(]

J boats were not cheap.
Since the boats are always closely matched it really is the sailor.
While we are at it I think dennis connor deserves to have his name in here for bringing the mug to the west coast...even though he threw a race to do it.

Hasnt that been the goal since we first decided to stop swimming to get from here to there?

I heard on PTI that only one sailor on the ORACLE boat was American. That struck me as funny.

Since the Americas cup stopped being about boats and became a technology war, I stopped caring.

So, you stopped caring back in the 1880's?

We knew you were old, but not that old.

I am referring to the period of time when they went from single hulled vessels to freaking catamarans, and all this high tech bullshit. Hell they should go back to using the blue nose schooners like the "America" was when we took the cup from the British.

One of our former posters, CaptainoftheSea, sails J boats, and competes in several major races in the New England area.

ShaharThorne -> RE: America's Cup Comeback! (9/28/2013 11:49:28 PM)

My idea of boating...Bass Tracker on the lake, fishing for some bass...no sails needed.

I miss my dad.
