The Iranian President Rouhani said that his country was interested in settling the outstanding issues surrounding its nuclear program in a speech to the UN.

Obama has responded by delegating Kerry to commence negotiations with Iran. While these are small steps, they represent the first tentative steps towards a settling a long festering dispute.

Could this be an outbreak of peace in a region blighted by war and friction? Is this the beginning of a new more realistic US policy towards the region? Are there grounds for optimism or is this another false dawn?

Can we trust Kerry and the President to be on the same page? They weren't regarding Syria.

I welcome Iran opening itself up for inspection and showing there's to be a non-weapon use of nuclear material. I don't have any problem with Iran getting energy via nuke power, either. I am against them having a nuke weapon. I'd much rather see the US, Russia and Switzerland be the only nuke-weapon states. Why Switzerland? Well, their general neutrality would mean that if the US or Russia used a nuke, they'd launch those bitches in retaliation; sorta like Internal Affairs for the "World Police" of US and Russia. It's a step in the right direction. That said, "peace" in this case is not only renunciation of nuclear weapon aspirations, but also non-nuclear meddling in other countries. In the middle east, Sunni and Shia are each intriguing to fight the other quietly.

It's not peace, but a step in that direction.

The timing is right that Rouhani would review things on his election, and then make a step like this after being informed. Of course, the fact that the real power behind the throne accepted this, is the real news.

I'm wondering what's behind this. It could be a ruse, to buy more time. It could be a realization that successful nuclear capability would invite a strike from Israel or the US, and it made sense to renounce that path and trade it in for goodwill.
