Yeah, it seems to be working quite well. You're still pushing to change the subject. So I guess it's fair to say you're willing to admit that with the UK's gun laws it's almost like not having any gun rights at all.

You're still pushing to keep the subject in those comfy narrow confines, I see. So I guess it's fair to say that the right to walk around without concern that you might face a gun isn't really a right that you value at all?

quote:

So turning to the right not to get shot, I have a question. I understand that guns are a factor in the risk of getting shot, but is that all you care about? I ask because I'm curious how you feel about people having a right not to be assaulted, robbed, and raped. You don't mention those, but you claim it's the the "gun freaks" who are ignoring such things. It seems to me that you are the one doing that. Because a gun is a very effective factor to have on your side when it comes to not being assaulted, robbed, or raped.

Would you be happy if the homicide rate went down but assaults, robberies, and rapes went up? There would be fewer dead, but more risk of assault, robbery and rape, and more victims whose quality of life has been shattered by crime. You make it sound like a simple seesaw relation that an idiot should be able to see. When the number of guns goes down, safety goes up and happiness abounds.

I didn't claim that gun-freaks are ignoring things like assault, robbery or rape, of course, that's clear from your own citation from my post, so the rest of your argument is against a straw man, K. As always, that straw man is a simpleton, natch.

There's no simple relationship between the number of guns and the numbers or (or severity) of assaults, robberies and rapes. If there were, then there should be huge numbers of assaults, rapes and robberies in the UK but far fewer (per capita, of course) in the USA. In order to bounce back the simplistic question: why isn't the USA so much more peaceful and law-abiding than it is? Why is it that so many countries have both strict gun control and (often much) lower rates of assault, robbery and rape?

Somewhat away from this: I'm beginning to wonder if there's something at the bottom of this control/non-control debate to do with what I think is an individual versus a social view. That is: those who argue for strict gun control and have it in their own country do so from a social basis. They ask, 'What's best for society as a whole?' But when I read the views of gun-supporters in the USA, their arguments seem much more to be about 'What if I were faced by X or Y sort of aggressor, with X or Y level of power to harm me?'. Well, a thought I shall chew on, anyway.

Or maybe it is from a dependence none dependence perspective

Whisky. I've just finished a bottle of wine, but I could *really* do with a bottle of Scotch right now. Arguments with female friends. Argumentative female friends should be shot. *Oops*.

One bottle of wine?
Can't hold your liquor I see.

And Florida had a 33% drop in crime when they instituted concealed carry.

You have been called on that particular piece of bullshit before...would you like it stuffed up your ass again? You do our cause no service when you use bullshit to bolster our position.

I have done more research since your post and indeed I was wrong, it was 36%

As I stated, the data show that the murder rate dropped 40% between 1992 and 2012.

Nope overall drop was 2.16% and the number of murders is going up.

Do you know what the word "rate" means?

K.

I do and the drop was still only 2.16% not 40% as you so imbecilely claim.

Yep, just like the rest of your countrymen got who disagreed with you.

Does it hurt that we have fewer murders, or that we can go about unarmed...... My Bad, still its good to see you are fully behind a democratic process, even if it is out of a gun barrel.

I regret our ever coming to your aid with our own personal firearms back when that paper hanger was threatening you. Oh, how you have forgotten.

History indicates that the u.s. contrbution to that enterprise was rather meager.

He wont get that, nor the fact he was late for the party.

So extremists who attack schools, or go on other mass shootings here in the US are fair game, but how dare anyone mention one that happens in the UK?

And if you're going to say that a man who goes into a school to shoot up children isn't an "extremist", then I don't know who is.

You dont get it, like most of those arguing with me.

One attack resulting in one death isnt the same as several attacks on a constant basis. The notion that all mass killers are extremists is absurd.

Have you ever heard of Oklahoma City, Americans don't need guns to commit evil acts.

Well duh....I never said they did. Interesting though that some of those defending guns have to keep going off topic or name calling to get a point across.

I have yet to see anyone of you argue with facts and figures.

Someone who writes as atrociously as you do should probably reconsider joking about other people's supposed lack of brains.

I actually find a number of intelligent and educated people, regardless of their political view to suck at grammar and spelling (myself included). I've also found the same when it comes to public speech. But it is October, and zombies do lurk more and more in this month as opposed to other months.....

Likewise. There's at least one person on this thread whose written English is somewhat less than polished. But the brain of that person is quite the opposite.

mnottertail -> RE: ***Unmoderated Gun rights debate - Self Defense to 2nd Amendment *** (10/11/2013 3:06:14 PM)

PeonForHer -> RE: ***Unmoderated Gun rights debate - Self Defense to 2nd Amendment *** (10/11/2013 3:18:14 PM)

Must you use that word with *any* spelling variation? It's rather common.

First that is inaccurate, we just don't come up with facts and figures you like.
Second as has been proven here repeatedly anyone can find a survey that "proves" their point.
Third Oklahoma city is not off subject, it was illustrating a point.
In along with my previous point, that when you eliminate firearms the U S still has a higher murder rate than the UK (not a point of pride to be sure) is to point out that our society is much different and more violent than yours.
Most of our crimes are caused by drug money fueled gangs. Moving to more primitive weapons only increases their power. Since those are facts which do not promote gun control they are dismissed by non Americans and by some Americans who want the easy solution of blaming an inanimate object when the real problem is feral teens and gangs.

Since this is suppose to be about the 2nd Amendment here is something interesting.

And I did not write this article.

As I pointed out in my last post you can find a link to "prove" anything.
This post unless you are predisposed to believe it to the kool aid level is completely irrational.
PS it also contradicts your favorite misconception concerning slavery.
