I'm pretty sure that these unread emails are sitting in the bulk folder or the intended reader is deleting them unread - which you can check by looking at your sent items. Seems as though you are targeting women who are not interested. As some other responders have mentioned, I do go check someone's profile before opening mail, if I don't like the profile or the writer is outside my parameters I delete the mail.
I love the hover feature and was thrilled when they introduced it. I would certainly not want them to change that.
You can help your messages be read more often by targeting women who are closer to your age, location, and by following whatever other parameters they mention. It'll also help to take the suggestions already given outside of the penis picture, there's plenty of work to be done yet on your profile.
