Sad to say, the honeymoon was brief. Here's a review I posted at Amazon.

Among the trials of this long year for yours truly were chemotherapy and adjusting to this laptop. Believe me, the laptop has been far worse.

In fairness to HP, some of the problems may stem not from the hardware but from the loathsome Win 8 OS--which, I fervently believe, was crafted by Microsoft contract workers taking out their second-class-status frustrations on users.

Not to say, "I told you so," but we all warned you against Win 8.

Some of the stuff under the hood is really pretty slick but the interface is just so crappy it defies description. I am an expert in Windows (several certifications, long time experience with working under the hood) and and I still won't touch it unless I'm forced to. I thought that MS couldn't ever do worse than MS-Bob or WinME. How wrong I was.

Indeed you did. As did my Facebook friends and even my mother!

Unfortunately, the Office Depot dude said it was Lose 8 or nothing. Having procrastinated on making the purchase (sigh) and being on the cusp of a lengthy hospital stay, I didn't shop around the way I should have.

It's the first afternoon of exile (aka working from home) here in Shutdown City, and it's already clear that my head will explode if I attempt hardcore work on my elderly Mac.

So I think I may hit Best Buy or Office Depot tomorrow for a laptop. Probably a PC, since they're what we use at work and also half the price.

Any advice re what to buy or to avoid? I'm a bit of a babe in the woods on this one.

As ever, many thanks!

HP is a great rig but if it fails in any way you'll see Jesus before they'll fix it.

Dell's have always been good for me and my brother thinks Acer makes an excellent device.

I don't know skadditch about these new Microsoft tablets but some think they're the best thing since the first time you got laid.

That's all I know.

So not buy something with shared memory. You cannot replace many parts when it breaks and it's slow. Go look around on newegg.com and find something with independent memory

I'm very late to this thread, but in case you haven't yet made a purchase:

I want a new Windows machine, but I'm holding out for Windows 9. The scuttle is that it will be a big improvement. 8 has been a disaster for the company, and MS employees know it. Windows 8.1 is already a major improvement over Windows 8. So if you need a PC right now this minute, get Windows 7 or 8.1.

ETA: Oh crap. Sorry for more salt in the wound. Hopefully you will grow to like Windows 8.

Lenovo is reknowned right now for their work station laptops. I personally prefer Asus (they also have longest battery life on full sized laptops).

She is constantly on the bed with it...the desk is used for the monitor and DVR. Now that the screen has broken off (she abuses her machines), she hooked the mainframe to the monitor on the desk and it is acting better. I told her last year NOT to get something with Win8 and I bought her dad a refurbished Dell PC with Win7 Pro which he loves. She is hoping the tax refund this year will get her a MacBook. I had my HP PC since November 2009...no crashes, no failures and I use Open Office.

Why would you need a fan to sit it on??

If it's getting too hot, it's either faulty or you're blocking the air intake for the internal cooling fan.
As for Win8, you can always blast whatever you buy with Win7 Ultimate or even XP if you're a die-hard. Or even a flavour Linux if you must.
Nobody has to endure the pain of Win8.

Note, she was talking about an HP Envy. There is a huge design flaw that causes overheating with that line. If you call about it all they keep telling you to do is clean the ventilation ports. My HP Envy 17D has even gotten so hot I received second degree burns to the palm of my left hand. And, NO the ventilation ports were neither blocked nor dirty.

Of all the brands of computers I've had over the decades I've had the least problem with Dell and Fujitsu.

Since Dell is doing massive layoffs I'm not sure I trust them any more.

My next laptop will be a return to a Fujitsu.
BTW, if you aren't familiar with Fujitsu, you have actually used them many times. Their main biz is the guts for over 80% of the ATM machines in the U.S. Excellent laptops but poorly marketed in the U.S. Gad, they were the first to sell tablet computers back in the 90s.

If you need a new rig....waiting for Win9 is a waste of time. Win7 is a rocking setup....and you can move to 9 in 40 minutes for what will then be 100 bucks or thereabouts....trust that they'll have a transitional download with nominal pain.

Win7 (available online everywhere....not in stores) is available now.

We are loooooong past the time when a new (Pentium or some such) chip is that significant enough to wait for.

If you need a new rig now...buy one....with Win7.

It'll suit your needs for easily 7 - 10 years for home....3 - 5 for corporate.

I'm going to agree with Lookie here. Who knows when Win 9 will come out. Get what you need now.

Relying on vaporware is a fools game.

ack sorry you are having trouble with it DC.... damn I wished I lived closer, I would take it back to a win 7 look at least, my daughter just got a HP lappy for uni and it took her an hour to bring it to me to get it all fixed up for her, unfortunately I dont do instructions well, im a hands on person.

Ive got an acer laptop, lasted me for years, and it was old when I got it. I did wanna get another one, but I just got a small tablet with a keyboard, so Im using that for non work stuff.
I use open office and have since it started, I also use google docs and drive because I can swap files between my lappy to my desktop to my tab, without having to redownload, altho the tableet doesnt run OO, it does run star office which works quite nicely./

we build and rebuild here a lot, between the four of us, mostly rebuild from the motherboard up, while I say I ve got an HP system, the insides are very dfifferent to how I got it

Has anybody seen or bought one of the new 40$ tablets?

I spent $90 on an Azpen 4.2 jellybean with a 9 inch display 2 weeks ago. At the time those 40 -50 buck ones were slightly smaller and a version older.

So far, I quite like it.
