dcnovice -> What do you live for? (10/5/2013 8:44:26 AM)

My oncology adventures have raised the question of what one lives for, and I'm curious to see how folks answer it. Please share if you feel so inclined. And let's see if we can save the snark for P&R. Thanks!

My kids.

I love the phrase "oncology adventures". I have been on my own oncology adventures in recent months and have probably have had some of the same contemplations.

I think I live for things similar to most- my family. Serving and loving Him give me strength and foundation, but watching my kids as they sprout wings and become adults fills me with endless joy and yearning to witness the next chapter.

I also live for those precious moments when one of my students gets turned on to science or gets that special light in his/her eyes from understanding. And what really gets me going is when a teenager thanks me for being an important adult in their lives.

I live for my family - I recently lost my dad and that has made my mum and siblings all the more precious to me.

I live for Master and his family, and for the exciting new life we have planned together.

I live for my students - the kind of children so many think of as being "poor little things" just because they have learning and physical disabilities. If they spent any time with these children and got to experience their joy and laughter then they would soon change their minds [:D]

I'm sorry for your loss.

I love your appreciation for the "poor little things". Bravo to you for being their teacher!

Since I'm in the middle of changing occupations and some other things as well,

I'm not sure.

Strange isn't it?

theshytype -> RE: What do you live for? (10/5/2013 10:39:20 AM)

Most certainly my kids. They give me something to live for, something to be proud of.
For me, anything that makes me feel useful, as though I've accomplished something that has meaning. The satisfaction of knowing and seeing my actions positively benefiting another life.
Each time one of my kids stands up against a bully for another kid, or puts their own money in a donation jar, I know I have positively influenced my little ones, which spreads beyond just me.

Plus, it's kind of fun to watch my little mini me's exhibit the same little quirks I have.

I also love the phrase 'oncology adventures'. DCN, somewhere in you, there must be a major vein of Britishness. [;)]

I live for things that are beautiful, I think.

DCN, you must enjoy lots of beautiful things, henceforth. That's an order. Failure in this will necessitate my sending in the Redcoats. You have been warned.

As someone that has battled depression and suicidal thoughts in the past, I've asked myself this question a lot over the years. And the answer changes depending on whether I'm in a low point or a high one. It's a question I've asked myself in a very real and continuing way.

In my lowest moments, I've grasped at whatever I could to motivate me to choose life. My friends and family were there at the top. I chose, time and again, that I would not hurt them that way.

In my healthier, stronger times, I choose to live for myself and the world. I believe that I have something worth giving, and it's important to me to give that to the world. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. By chosing to not only live, but to live by my standards, I believe I bring good to the world. It may only be my little corner of the world, but I actively strive to bring honour, integrity, positive thoughts and energy, support and love into the world. Though the negativity that abounds touches me and affects my heart and head, I refuse to pay it forward.

If, on the other hand, your question was more along the lines of what do we feel passionate about, that's different. In that case, for me it's art and creativity. Creating with my hands, hearing someone's soul poured out into a song, expressions of self through any and all mediums. That ability to touch another person, perhaps long after you've been there, and give them hope, compassion, understanding. Even the art that touches on the darker topics can bring a person hope by showing them that they are not alone. Someone else has been there.

Sorry if this wasn't what you were looking for dc. It's just where my mind went when I read your op.

Not biologically but somewhere along the way, I became something of an Anglophile--to the horror, no doubt, of my Irish ancestors. I spent my junior year of college at the University of Sussex outside Brighton. I invited the queen to dinner in my bedsitter, but she couldn't make it. Someplace, I still have a very polite note of regret. I did get to attend the memorial service in Westminster Abbey for poet laureate John Betjeman. That was a highlight.

{{{HUGS}}} DC! I live to give hugs.

Somewhere else I said I lived for yarn. Yarn gives me the means to express my love of family and friends.

What do I live for a very good question right now as I am feeling very low. getting a divorce (my idea) after 34 years of marriage has made me think about this a lot. My Children of coarse and grandson. the few friends that I still have.

The perfect moments. I haven't had anywhere near enough of them yet.

Looking at my sleeping wife, before I wake her with a kiss, as I'm heading off to work.

Sipping coffee on the deck, while the sun rises over the desert.

Catching a curve and gear in perfect harmony on a canyon road.

Finding help for someone who has lost hope.

Laughing so hard that tears roll down my face.

Oh geez, you are blowing your "hard as nails" persona, next thing we know you will be singing Kumbiya or The lion sleeps tonight holding hands with tree huggers.

Actually I agree with everything you said, I just hope I meet someone to experience the "watching my wife sleep" thing.
