Status: offline 		Assumption: Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic candidate for President in 2016.

Question 1: Who will be the actual Republican presidential candidate in 2016 running against Hillary Clinton?

Question 2: Who should be the Republican presidential candidate in 2016, if defeating Hillary Clinton is the sole objective?

Status: offline 		As I understand there are right now two possible candidates. Both are from the Tea Party Ted Cruz or Paul Ryan. However in my view neither have a chance against Clinton.

Status: offline 		No way. The last predictable candidate running for election (NOT reelection) was Dole. Coming out of the blue, we've had Clinton, Carter, and Obama for the Dems; and Romney, McCain, and W for the GOP. None predictable.

The 2016 primary will be a power struggle within the GOP. The moderates vs the righties. So far, the moderates have taken it, but who knows?

I expect a governor to take it. Possibly Jindal - Christie's not about to win the primary. I would have predicted Ryan but he's been keeping a low profile.

I wish Meghan McCain were in.

Given the current GOP performance in Congress it seems unlikely that any candidate will be drawn from there. There seems to me to be only one possible outcome to the Budget crisis and it isn't pretty from a GOP perspective. Any prospective candidate from Congress will be tainted by the shutout failure.

You have correctly identified the clash between the moderates and righties as a critical issue here. Is there any one in the GOP who can carry their base while still appearing reasonably sane and electable ? I don't know of any one.

Unless the GOP finds a solution to this problem, the Ds could nominate a donkey and still breeze into the White House in 2016.

With so many candidates vying for the bugfuck insane vote it might be Christy or the "reasonable" Ryan winning. Or one of the nuts could be the consensus candidate for the that wing and go on to be crushed in the general.

1. I'm agreeing with DarkStephen that it's likely to be a governor, rather than a Federal representative. Jindal, Kasich (Ohio), Daniels (Indiana), Walker (Wisconsin), Perry (TX) may all vie.

2. Gennifer Flowers or Monica Lewinsky

Agreed. Though a lot of people were saying Obama would be nominated - just not in '08. I remember the opinion was basically Hillary for '08 and Obama for '12 (if she lost) or '16.

I think if the GOP was seriously trying to win with a viable candidate, they might pick Christie. Even a lot of Democrats like him. But you're right that they're probably not going to, because the far right hates him for being moderate. You're probably right about it being a governor, somebody that has executive experience but most people are not familiar with. Ted Cruz might want to be President, but his extremism is very public. There's just no way.

Doesn't the far right consider Rubio a RINO (like Christie) because he supports a sort-of amnesty plan? I could be wrong about that. Having a minority candidate might be good for them, though - it would piss off some of the radicals but I think would help their image with minorities and moderates.

I just listed the guys who have taken to giving speeches in Iowa and New Hampshire not who may or may not have a real chance.

Also I did forget, which is so apropos, Rick Perry should be on the list. He might even have a chance as he is clearly bugfucking insane and is tight with some of the Texas oil billionaires who fund bugfuck insane Republicans.

Status: offline 		Amash is nearly pragmatic, which irks the 'republican/conservative/independent/teabagger' faithful. That would be mostly pure wishing and a miracle that he could get backing from the party.

He voted against XL Keystone, he is trying to take your oil away.

If the citizens of Kentucky start paying attention he won't even get re-elected to the Senate. Kentucky is, by all accounts, having a very successful ACA rollout, both Medicaid expansion and exchanges. Also Paul has come out against the very successful, in Kentucky at least, Common Core school standards which have resulted in a significant improvement in educational outcomes in Kentucky.

Yeah, I think he's conservative enough to have a chance at the nomination, but his talk about seceding from the Union won't look good in the general election.
