A little less controversial than the other thread.

My little brother was at a comedy club when the guy on the stage started going into a racist diatribe hidden as humor. Lil bro decided to heckle him because the comedian was being a jerk.

:Oh, so what are you?"

"I'm a Scottish Jew. That means that I'll drink a fuckload and stick you with the bill."

My brother got more laughs for that one sentence than the comedian got through his entire act.

Has anybody else who considers the nickname of Washington's NFL football team be a racist slur ever given thought to unofficially changing their name to "The Washington Racists"? If enough people made a habit of referring to them only by that name, I'd bet the team owner would reconsider changing its official nickname.

Far less

While I think complaining about things like the fighting Illini is stupid the Redskins is the one truly racist team name I know of.
I'm so used to calling them damn redskins I'm not sure I can change.

Although I'm not a sports fan, I'm originally from the Wash DC area when the Redskins were the team (although Dallas Cowboys fans might beg to differ) for a very long time. Their name was controversial then, and there were always rumors swirling around about making possible name-changes.

I suppose the Native Americans was too long a name to use. The Potomac is already a famed river. Geronimo was an Apache, and therefore not regional to this area. Besides, once something becomes iconic, it should stay that way, whether it's a pancake mix brand or whatever. I never considered it racist, but I'm not full-blooded Indian either. Has the NAACP changed it's name? Hardly. When a name is bestowed with honorary intent, and establishes a name for itself, why change it to appease the fickle public in a feeble attempt to be 'politically correct'?

Why do comedians insist on telling the same tired old jokes? Dead silence would be funnier.

There is a college in town that was founded by the Methodist church specifically to give Native Americans the chance at a higher education. The predominately Native American Student body of the inaugural class voted on a school mascot.

They voted overwhelming in favor of the Indian as a mascot.

Five years ago, the NCAA informed the school that they had to change mascots or be barred from competing in NCAA sports. Why, because some group of "modern" politically correct Native Americans filed an official complaint with the NCAA.

There are the following professional sports teams, The Braves, The Kansas City Chiefs, The Cleveland Indians, The Washington Redskins, every one of those team names have been declared offensive.

As far as colleges go, many have been forced by the NCAA to change their mascots, notable exceptions are Florida State, Utah, Illinois and Central Michigan, supposedly due to getting permission to use the names by the Native American tribes involved.

It is also true that those schools generate millions in revenues for the schools and NCAA from sporting events.

My point, this politically correct bullshit has really gotten to the point of being stupid. What is next, PETA filing complaints against the Huskies, Game Cocks, Bruins, Dolphins? Or maybe unusually tall people will complain about the term "Giants."

I have no objection to politically incorrect jokes that are actually funny.

I believe Andy Kaufman tried that a few times. Didn't work.

Then there was Steve Martin. He would not only tell the same old tired joke, but he'd tell it over and over and over for fifteen or twenty minutes straight. Yet many people thought he was funny.

There's always the Fighting Whites, a real college team. I'd post a picture of their mascot, but something tells me I'd get a gold letter. It is a cool mascot and logo, though.

I think if sportcasters and journalists began referring to the Redskins as the Washington R Word, people would quickly understand that the present name is offensive as all fuck.

How is the Redskins more offensive than the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Chiefs?

Or how the NCAA has, after complaints from Native Americans have forced schools to change mascot names, including one local college that was founded for the education of native Americans and the mascot was chosen by the first class of Native Americans to attend the school.

Unless of course the schools in question make big bucks in sports revenues.

What about teams such as the Game Cocks?

There are a lot of nick names I find offensive, but I dont see anyone attempting to change those names, I mean the Fighting Irish refers to the stereotypical Irish brawler, although this image usually indicates the Irish person is drunk off his ass.

You are taking this compound word much too literally. Those of us in the Washington DC metro area where the team originated held this name in the highest esteem, with great affection (other than native Texan Cowboys fans). Go Redskins! never had any racist connotation to it. If anything, it took a derogatory slur - which had been used similarly like the n-word - and de-sensitized people to it. It lost the power of its ugliness and became a power word unto itself. (Not so with the pejorative compound "Halfbreed.")

My in-laws are still loyal Redskins fans to this day. (They never accepted the former Baltimore Ravens as a substitute.) When I give gifts to my sister-in-law, I know to choose the burgundy and gold team colors.

Had a coworker once who had "halfbreed"tattoo'd on his arm,but got offended anytime any of us called him half and half ect.

ironic aint it

what's also ironic is the rabblerabble people have for sports teams, but very few of them quibble bout having jackson on the twenty
Jackson probably committed more heinous acts on the native american community then any other figure in american history...other then the flu

Because "redskin" is and always has been been used and intended as a racist slur, on a par with N word that CM won't even let me post. "Indians" comes from an Italian who was a bit confused about where he was. It was not intended as a racist slur and is less often used as one that it's used as a simple, albeit misguided description. The words "braves" and "chiefs" also are not used primarily as racist slurs and in fact, no matter where anyone's ancestors came from, one wouldn't have to go much more than a couple of hundred generations back to find braves and chiefs.

Now, as to the mascots, cheers and logos used by the Indians, Braves and Chiefs, those are a different matter; and among the primary reasons I "hate" the Braves and the Indians. As to the Chiefs, I'm too apathetic about the entire NFL to waste a good sports "hate" on them.

Game Cocks are poultry. Poultry with an attitude, but poultry nonetheless.

And how can anyone leave the Pekin Chinks out of this conversation? They did change it to the dragons or something a while back. (Google it if you are curious)
I can see how the Redskins would offend. The Florida Seminoles actually polled the tribe and the result was the large majority were seminole fans.

How about the Fighting Irish. Nothing like a mascot that stereotypes drunk Irish brawlers
