According to Gallup the GOP is at present more unpopular than it was at the very end of the W era and during the Clinton impeachment debacle. That is quite an accomplishment. Maybe the Congressional Republicans could actually cause a default or keep the government shut down for a while long and see how low their national support can go ahead of the 2014 primaries.

I'd be interested to know what the enrollment of the two parties are because over the last few years I have heard more and more people I know say that they plan on leaving the Republican party and re-registering as an Independent. The reason cited is usually "the Republicans have gone bat shit crazy," or some variation thereof.

I couldn't find anything more recent than 2012
http://www.people-press.org/2012/08/23/a-closer-look-at-the-parties-in-2012/

Those who self identify as Republicans has dropped about 5% since 2002, the most recent peak, and all of that shift seems to have gone into self identified independents.

That makes sense. Just because they've lost their taste for the for the Republican party doesn't mean they're ready to join up with the Democrats. The important question is, of course, who will they vote for?

They are still teabaggers at heart and will vote for Paul, or that other 'libertarian' twatwaffle Johnson of New Mexico. They have been working that shit pretty hard these last few years and increasingly getting nowhere but laughed at.

If that 5% are mostly moderates I'd expect a split. Some will hold their noses and vote Repuiblican, some will stay home and some will vote for Democrats.

I find those that switch from Republican to Independent are STILL Republican. They just do not want the stigma of 'Putting their money where their mouth is'. Better to lurk in secret than be proud of your views I guess. Never less, we have a few 'independent' political individuals here that place Republicans in the best possible light, and Democrats in the worst. They constantly attack President Obama over petty things, while totally ignoring the major FUBARs of the former Bush administration or the current Republican/Tea Party of today.

An actual independent would NEVER vote in favor of the Tea Party. The Tea Party right now is NOT the Tea Party of Boston long ago. The real Independents see the Tea Party for what it is: borderline traitors! They will have NOTHING to do with anyone that associates themselves with the Tea Party. Hence, they don't Republican. The will in fact vote Democrat in some instances and third party in others.

What i find amusing about teabaggers is that somehow they think that the Koch Brothers are pouring in all that money to protect your (the teabaggers) rights. And that; in and of itself, takes a special kinda stupid, weapons grade stupid, at least.

I never believed the teajahdist`s claim that they were a broad coalition of all political leanings.....

They were from the start, the radical lunatic fringe extreme element of the gop.

The folks St Ronnie was referring to when he said "My right hand doesn`t know what his far right hand was doing"

Not a single independent bone in there bodies...

But you can give us some examples of independence by the tea-party fakes, if you think you can, Treasure.

Bet you can`t though....

Why would I want to give you examples of tea party members who are independent when the issue was independents supporting the tea party?

The big question is, when will the independents be able to form their own party? Can't come too soon for me.

But can they call themselves, "Independent"? Because they would be a party, they wouldn't be...

The biggest problem I see is declaring a platform to run on. The two primary parties have managed to make almost every issue a yes/no matter of refusing to compromise. How does an Independent steal issues from people who represent that kind of thinking? They'd be slaughtered by both sides of the aisle.
