Can the dog be trained out of this behavior? Yes. However I get the idea that you don't have the skills to do that. It takes time and experience to train even a young dog to do that. Your "puppy," at 11 years old, is an octogenarian. There is a saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." That's not quite true but it's close enough to match your situation. My mother keeps saying this about teaching her old dog to walk on a leash. I'm sure Reba would take to it perfectly fine and the problem is in fact with my mother, who doesn't want to do it. Reba is deaf, and when she gets hit by a car, it will be entirely my mother's fault. They walk on a dirt road, the traffic is little and slow, and my mother thinks it's perfectly reasonable for the drivers to look out for Reba >.<
