i never leave her and the babies un attended, i was hoping though to teach her these chickens are a no no. And she was curious but not making any motions to hurt them or nothing. she just stared and stared and stared, fixedly at them. We have had chickens before, they were all grown up by the time she came along though, and i know for a fact she'd eat or hurt one of them given the chance, she did once already through my dad's neglect to fix the fence properly. she attacked one and tore it's back open but it lived thankfully. And ever since then my dad fixed the fence and she has not done anything to try to get the birds, she hasn't been given a chance to either. I think this is not a good thing. but i dunno. for those of you who do not remember or know Calley is an 11 year old Golden retriever i adopted from homeward bound when she was about to turn 10. Can she even be taught not to bother these chickens? after all i do understand she is a hunting type dog by nature. and sometimes you hve to start them as p uppies, and she is far from a pup.

yes, they can become quite friendly. I imagine the dog is staring from bewilderment, having in 11 years never seen the like. Check your dogfood brand, does it contain chicken? Think about it.

She used to eat lamb and rice senior formular, i don't know if her new stuff has chicken in it. i imagain it may.

She is considering whether or not they are prey. The answer is Yes. I grew up on a farm with hundreds of chickens and an English Setter. When the dog killed the first chicken my grandfather took the dead chicken and used a piece of rope to tie the chicken around her neck. He left it on her for three days. After he removed it she never touched another chicken again.

She can be taught to leave them alone, tell her no when she is around them a few times, dogs are smarter than most of their owners.

If an adult chicken was seen as prey then I would guess she is seeing chicks as a potential snack. My brother has a dog who would never see a small animal as prey, although she could lick something to death.

FR This is the dog that is animal aggressive right? If so it can never ever be safe around another animal of any sort. You choose not to attempt to train the dog out of that behavior so it will always behave that way. For probably the hundredth time return this animal to the shelter and arrange for it to go to home where it will be properly exercised and trained.

Can the dog be trained out of this behavior? Yes. However I get the idea that you don't have the skills to do that. It takes time and experience to train even a young dog to do that. Your "puppy," at 11 years old, is an octogenarian. There is a saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." That's not quite true but it's close enough to match your situation.

We were able to teach the dog next door to not go after my chickens or their chickens. It was a few months before we were able to trust that she wouldn't kill one of them. This meant constant supervision when the chickens were out and she was there with them. However, the dog is young. I would suspect it would take longer for an older dog.

Her dog kept upsetting her by killing song birds, so...one day she took one of the dog's kills and sewed it up into a handkerchief and stitched this around her dog's collar. No idea how you train dogs, other than introduce them to the other animal, and keep saying no. I did manage to persuade 6 hunter cats, that if it came in the house alive, it stayed that way.. We had a house bunny, that was fine amid my rabbit eating cats. We had 2 mice that got out the cage and lived. Ok are one whimp who let them out guarded them, but they didn't run off. Our best was a cat that had kittens and would only leave if the dog baby sat. Were all the animals that lived in my house nuts, or was living in my house what sent them nuts. We will never know lol

dogs can be taught to leave things alone. my patterdale bitch was fine with my cats, but she is a killing machine and anything else that is not a dog is going to die. it's another reason I no longer have show rats. it wouldn't be fair to them or her. my first dog was fine with anything so long as you told him it was a baby. I have a photo of him somewhere with a baby song thrush between his paws, but it was safe because he knew it was a baby. my current dog is obsessed by birds and I know he'd kill them in an instant. he's a border collie. my dad has a six month old bitch and she has already killed a sparrow. most gun dogs that I know are taught to be careful bringing back birds, but by nature dogs are still not that far removed from their wolf and fox ancestors. to that end instinct will take over. if it smells like food, looks like food, and it's in a handy pen then it's fair game. I should have thought this would also be stressful for the chicks to have the dog staring at them all the time, as well as stressful for the dog too. needles

My mother keeps saying this about teaching her old dog to walk on a leash. I'm sure Reba would take to it perfectly fine and the problem is in fact with my mother, who doesn't want to do it. Reba is deaf, and when she gets hit by a car, it will be entirely my mother's fault. They walk on a dirt road, the traffic is little and slow, and my mother thinks it's perfectly reasonable for the drivers to look out for Reba >.<

Funny things happened today. While the young dog has stopped chasing chickens the older dog has been trained to know which chickens she is allowed to chase. She spent 2 hours this afternoon keeping my rooster away from the hens at her house. It was funny watching the rooster go around and around the tree with the dog hot on his tail. They went through the wild roses and through the pasture. Then they did the upper pasture which worked well for the rooster (the fence was an advantage for awhile) until the dog learned to go through the gate to get the rooster again. Poor rooster never did get to settle down with what he considers HIS hens. Dog was happy to have a job to do (keeping him away from what she considers is her family's hens.) I got the entertainment of watching my rooster try to outthink a dog. Not sure what will happen this spring. Neighbor on one side is taking 3 of my hens for the winter. I'll get them back in the spring. Neighbor on other side is taking 3 of my hens and will keep them for good as I only need 3 hens to keep us in eggs. Then there is the rooster. Woody will spend the winter across the street at Gary's sister's place....hopefully staying there with all her other hens and roosters and not coming up the hill to reclaim the hens he thinks are his. Everyone says they'll take care of what needs to be done while Gary and I spend the winter in AZ. I'm really lucky that people have said they'd take care of my chickens or I couldn't have them at all. In the meantime...I'm already starting to miss my chickens. We spent most of the summer sitting outside and watching them do their thing and interact. It was great entertainment. It's too cold outside to be out there watching the flock. I'm trying to get enough pictures now to keep me kind of satisfied through the winter. And if anyone wants to know.....YES all my girls have names and I even know who lays eggs on what days. Four lay green eggs, one lays blue eggs, and little Dawn, the brahma cross lays light brown eggs. The other hens are Abigail, Babs, Dash, Charlotte, and Manx (poor thing has no tail at all.)
