I have a dell 2400 desktop, and lately it's been shutting down on it's own, and now I'm
getting a "switch to AC power and save my work or else" error message when I turn it back on. It also mentions a battery.

So, what doest his mean, and do I need some sort of battery? I know there is one for the clock, but thought that's the only one. It's about 10 years old, and other than this, I've never had a real problem with it.

That's crazy. Your desktop thinks it's a laptop. Do you still have the OS disk that you uploaded the operating system from?

A couple of things?

My desk top began shutting down when it was overheating.
Taking the cover off and blowing it out with canned air can help.

Have you run a virus/malware scan on it lately?

Sometimes it makes a difference if you do it in Safe Mode.

My first desk top needed to have the dog hair removed from the fan at about five years of age.
This one is ten years old and acting up. But I have to admit I haven't opened it up and cleaned dog hair off the fan ever.

Cat hair would be just as bad for it.

Dell has a diagnostic tool you can run from web.

It's not cat hair, I open it up and clean it out every so often. Kirata, I'll run that tool.

Steven, lol...that was my first thought...WTF??? Battery? Of course, I'm not a techhie person at all, I refuse to even get a smart phone cuz I don't need to be reminded that I'm an ifjit. I do have all the cd's that came with it, I was just hoping that I wouldn't have to do that to fix it. Maybe I should bite the bullet and upgrade to another windows OS.

I have a good virus program on it, and a registry cleaner. Other than that error message popping up, I haven't noticed any performance problems. I just don't know if there's only the one battery for the time/date function or something else hidden behind a board someplace. I tried to look in the help and support, but no matter what I type in for search criteria, I get all sorts of useless stuff instead. UGH! I just haven't felt like screwing with it since the whole ankle/leg incident. Now that I'm not so foggy from drugs, I'll look into it a bit more.

Crazy message. That is usually reserved for laptops not desktops.
Nevertheless, there is a battery inside your desktop case. Open it up and you will find a flat disk about the size of a nickel. Be warned though, if you replace or remove that even for a short time it will reset the clock back to the original date. Once you are back in windows you will have to update the date and time. Addionally you may have to re-activate windows.

NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

If you do this, your computer will have a different personality and you will likely spend hours trying to get your printer and monitor to work with the new OS.

The fact that you have the installation CDs means that reinstalling the same OS is a possible fix.

The first thing I'd check is the power settings to see if they've got altered somehow. Settings - Control Panel - Power Options. It's possible to set a desktop to act as though it's a laptop, for instance.

I did what you suggested Peon and checked out the power settings. I'm not sure what they were at, but it was set to hibernate and shut down. The folks here at the place I'm staying helped move me to the downstairs room, and the guy who moved the computer may have reset something. So we'll see if that was the issue.

I went on youtube to get directions on changing the battery, and all the information said that the need to change the battery would be apparent when the date/time start showing up wrong. That's not the issue here, the date and time are fine.

Kirata, I tried running that program, and it kept shutting itself off, giving me the error message indicating the program encountered a problem and had to close. Any other suggestions?

I wish I knew more about computers internally than just the programs they run.....and Steven, I'll take your NOOOOOOO! to heart and leave it alone. [:)]

I wouldn't do it deliberately, natch. I might do the reverse, though, if I had a laptop that I only ever used plugged in. The feature is there so that you can adapt your edition of Windows to whatever sort of machine you've got - laptop or desktop. When you buy either, the power-settings are usually set to fit what you've got - but they can get altered mistakenly.

About a year or so ago my PC started doing strange things, one of which was to give me various error messages and shutting down various programs at odd times. It turned out that my hard drive was going bad. I'm NOT saying that is what your problem is, but that it could be an indication of something more serious and that it might be a good idea to have someone with computer diagnostic experience look at it.

Also, don't forget to turn off the monitor (that actually shuts off the computer....many people are unaware of that).

Sounds like you are running Windows XP and Microsoft stop doing updates for that OS.

Try a malware program. Mine baby is 3 or 4 years old and I get a pop up once in a while...

Now to plot vengeance on the hacker that wants my PIN number to my debit card (My bank warned me that someone was going to do it)...anyone got a good bestiality site I can throw at them?
