We took a nice drive up into the Southern Sierra Nevada yesterday. We were camping in a private area and our reservation was unaffected. As we drove up the Kern, the gates were closed along all the campground areas, and a lot of people were simply camping off the side of the road, or in the day use picnic areas. The parking lots were open at those, but all the toilet facilities were padlocked. Fortunately, someone had already ripped the padlock off of one, and saved me the trouble, when the wife was nearing a crisis point. Normally, it's $5 to park at The Trail of 100 Giants, but the payment envelopes hadn't been stocked, so I assumed it was free. No rangers to be seen, but there were plenty of people who paid as much attention to the closed notice as we did.
