Well, it certainly makes more sense for women to have been making paleolithic cave art than limiting this activity to having been produced by young boys based on hand size & dimensional attributes. Who's to say it wasn't BOTH adolescent boys AND girls, if that were the case? Re an older conclusion mentioned in this article: "Biologist Dale Guthrie, for example, conducted a study of the hand art and concluded that they were most likely made by adolescent boys."

When my dad used to take my brother and me to the officers' shooting range every other weekend, I was hitting all the skeet pulled after the first 1-2 times handling a rifle.* There's no reason to assume females were not involved in hunting in prehistoric days, nor that males were not involved in the food-gathering process. Logically, whoever had the best skills at doing specific tasks went ahead and did them, whether it was being an expert shot, following animal tracks, locating nests/dens, or being adept at finding vital resources needed to sustain the tribe. It was all about survival back then. Along with procreative pursuits, naturally.

ETA: * I was also just as good at fly-cast fishing as my (older) brother was.

it does not surprise me that it has never occurred to the male ego, that usually has to claim the credit for everything, that females did the cave paintings. it makes perfect sense though really.

Love the manology

Same thing my grandpappy told me.He'd seen the caves of Lascaux before they were closed to the public, and noticed the hand prints were mighty dainty.

LMAO, I have OFTEN looked at these hand marks on the cave paintings and noticed that they have the female features they describe; I thought it was very odd that they were always attributed to being made by MALES.

PyrotheClown -> RE: Cave Art Done by Women (10/14/2013 4:30:16 PM)

Yeah, you would think that the male scientist would attribute paintings to woman,as the men were all out doing more important things like hunting ,inventing and adventuring and that sorta thing. It takes a womans touch for home decor to do such trivial things
A woman's place is in the cave, cooking up cave bear, barefoot and presumably pregnant

I hope peoples sarcasm detectors are functioning properly today

Because the images were in fact internal dialogue and communal emotional themes expressed in pictorial "memoire" stuff, rather than an actual plot.

Cute, but probably true. Not enough technical detail or rudimentary schematics. (Trail to watering hole where 'X' marks the spot) Color pigments used match cave walls. Stuff like that.

Actually Lookie, this finding is going by the size of handprints made. Small (delicate?) hands, not consistent with manly dimensions.

NoBimbosAllowed -> RE: Cave Art Done by Women (10/14/2013 10:40:35 PM)

also women are quicker to appreciate and embrace 'timeless' concepts rather than "Thog go on hunt. Thog kill Mammoth. Thog eat mammoth. Thog make Thogetta take Thog in ass if she want good piece of roast mammoth. She only get gibblets for oral. Thog come in Thoggetta booty, Thog fall 'sleep, story over, nothing more."

Lauscaux offers far more than that, so, at the risk of sounding reverse sexist, I say (as someone from the publishing world), I doubt the cave art coud have been achieved by Male Meatheads.
