Why Chinese actually envy the US government shutdown

Of course, Americans view the impasse as a sign of political dysfunction. But to many Chinese commentators, it also reveals certain strengths. Since the shutdown began nine days ago, Chinese social media have been full of wistful, almost admiring remarks about how the shutdown could only happen in a democratic country with a resilient economy and responsive political representation.

"The government's closed — is this bad?" wrote Chen Zhiwu, a user on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo. "In the American system, arguments among Republicans and Democrats and the president are normal and should happen because levying taxes, incurring debts, and paying expenses involves the taxpayer's interests and their money. So, elected representatives and the president should not treat these things lightly. To take these matters seriously is their responsibility and duty."

Keeping federal workers at home while paying them their full salaries is insane to me. Who thought this idea up? What is it supposed to accomplish?

It was quite common during the Cold War for right wingers to compare the USA to Communist Russia. Nothing like setting the bar low when you want to jump over it. Your post is a modern variation.

If that were true today, I'm sure the President would have fired the whole of the Republican/Tea Party months if not years ago. Since in a business, something like....this crap.....would never be tolerated. Ironic isn't it, that how the Chinese and US Businesses behave and operate in a better system then the Republicans/Tea Party want the US Government to handle operations? They really believe their fellow Americans are their opponents and NOT the Chinese. The depth of their paranoid schizophrenia.....

The President doesn't have the ability to fire the Republican party. Thats a fundamental misunderstanding of how
a). How the govt works.
b). How republicans view how government should work.

Republicans think the enormous productivity gains that have occured in private enterprise should also occur in government. Due to computers, office productivity software, cell phones, the internet - productivity of office workers has sky rocketed.

Except in the government where it is currently mired at about 1985 levels....

The democrats are not my party. For that matter, neither are the republicans. But the reason they try to harm America with such zeal is because they value political hegemony over the health of the republic. Obviously.
