Cool anthropology article about a site they found in MD called Pig Point.

Pig Point

The Chesapeake Bay area isn't nearby where I live in MD, but this Lothian location is relatively insulated inland. Less developed, easier to preserve as an undisturbed archaeological site. I have no such luck stumbling upon any finds. You can still find an arrowhead here and there. Nothing in the way of gemological specimens for rock hounds such as myself. Once my son & his dad found an intriguing fossil near the ski resort they where they went every so often. It had a small feline paw print impression the size of a housecat's but couldn't have been made by a domesticated cat for obvious reasons. It was fossilized, after all in drab grey rock. I urged my son to take it into school for show & tell, which he did. As soon as he presented it to his Social Studies teacher, who had an large artifact display case in his classroom, the teacher said, "Okay, I'll take it." Literally.
We never got it back, nor did my son have the opportunity to present it to his class. [sm=angry.gif]

ETA: The students did get to view it locked inside the case all year long. As far as I know, it's still there on display.

That's terrible. What a horrid teacher.

it wouldn't have stayed there had that been my son. the teacher would have given it back on my say so, or else. what an arsehole thing to do to a kid.

Chesapeake.......all I can think of is Hannibal and his long pig having just watched the series!

He was kind of a doddering, absent-minded, nerdy type of teacher. We didn't know when he might have been planning to work in a s&t segment since there wasn't officially a show & tell anymore by 6th grade.

Thanks for the sentiments from you and Chatte, but my son got his mileage out of it by proudly pointing out his specimen to his classmates. It was an honor of sorts that this teacher prized the find, which gave my son credibility. So there were trade-offs.
